I skinned two up for Julian Beckett and Steve Dorling but replaced the ply with 1/64" and added only 1 layer of 50g cloth on top and a second fine 18g veil for surface finish.

I reckon their models will be about 1 1/2lbs lighter than mine and should be much more versatile until the wind blows. Mine was test flown off the great orme in 65mph winds. Mst excellent.

Hold the fly ins at a weekend and you're in with a chance Lee but the Mynd ain't no Jart hill!

Right so I did a little more carbon festivness and glassed the tail, sorry no pics at the mo but more will follow tonight once all is set. Final coat for carbon tonight this will be the onshow carbon so will have to be really neat ( I struggle with neat )  I will post as and when I take some more pic's.

Well all didn't go as planned, I have discovered a small bend on the tail end of the fuse. I have spoken to the guru ( Reed, thanks again ) and it will be ok after a bit of jiggery pokery.

There's a lesson to be learned here for all those doing a lost foam build, Check it at every stage inc after tape, It may seem obvious but I missed it, Only on flat checking the fuse did it appear, Glad I found it now rather than in the air.

Anyway once the fuse is straight I will put the next layer of carbon on. Then pics will be a plenty.

Anyone help me sourcing the right sort of foam, carbon cloth, glass cloth and resin? I'm new to all this stuff after a serious "time warp" in my building activities. Last I heard, glass cloth and resin was for building 1:1 scale canoes in the garage.....

(I still have mountains of balsa and aliphatic glue in the workshop!)  J.

Hi Jac

Take a look at  www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/ , He is really helpfull and should be able to send you what you want for a good price ( tell him what it's for )

For the foam just get some insulating foam, Keep an eye out when ever you go anywhere nearly all building sites will have some and I am sure if you ask it wont cost a thing.

Hope this help's

Well after a little fiddling I have got the tail straight, So on with the show,

Next job was to put a top layer of carbon on this will give it strength for those gravity effects the we all seem to get now and then,

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j175/ViperTBE/jarttoplayer.jpg

That was done yesterday, the edges were tidyed up and smoothed ready for a layer of Fibreglass cloth ( gives the final finish )

A small amount of M3 to hold it in place,

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j175/ViperTBE/jartglass.jpg

and wet

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j175/ViperTBE/jartwetglass.jpg

Now once this is set I will wet & dry sand it till its smooth and shiny ( after doing the other side of corse) Then It will be ready for some paint.

How are you going to join / fit the wings. Have you give this any thought yet.

Nearly finished the CAD file for my built up fus, and I'm looking for ideas.

Andy

Hi Andy if you look at my drawings (first page) you will see that the wing will be bolted down with shear bolts, once the wings are in, the canopy will sit on top held in place with mag's.

The fuse is looking damb sexy now with the glass on carbon effect, Cant wait to glass the other side and get it wet & dried,

OOOOoooohh shiny shiny CARBON !!!!

Is the carbon fibre around the body, a single peice?

If so how do you handle the body during the lay up and support it whilst curing.

Of course I am intrigued how you cut it for hatches etc.

Hi Erfolg

The Carbon ( hmmmm carbon ) Is layed up as follows

1) carbon strip top and bottom

2) carbon wrap from bottom to top of both sides just meeting the top strip

3) the last wrap of carbon covers the same as 2 but top to bottom and doesn't cover the tail fin.

The canopy will be cut out as per first pic on this build thread ( click it to enlarge ) The drawings then give you an idea of how the wings will be fitted.

The only thing that worries me is doing the glass for the fancy canopy lid.

I will layup the other side for glass later.

Are stages 1-3 done:

  •  in a single session or
  • when first peice is green or
  • after each peice has gone off?

I thought cutting carbon (Kevlar) is realy difficult once cured and getting a reasonable edge also difficult.

I have a really good dremil for cutting the hatch. I will finish the edges with a gromet type material, The lay up is done in stages letting each layer set before the next layer goes on, I could bang nails in with it, It already weighs 22oz so cant wait for the wing's to arrive and see what they weigh I am hoping for around 50oz AUW because Reed says this is best allround weight.

I will put more photos on once I feel up to glassing the other side ( ill in bed at the mo)

Right I have forced myself back to the building board and done the second layup of glass on the port side ( lol that almost sounds like I know ) So just a case of letting that set now and then on to next stage, Will be hacking again soon.

Just a quick update, The jart is getting very shiny. Bit more wet and dry and it will most definatly be the Carbon Bling Jart.... o BLING!!

Huh...you could of got the weave ends to line up where they meet, how dya expect this to fly straight now ? tut
Show/hide user stats

LOL Tim, I struggle with wall papering to would you believe it.

Why on earth do you think I am painting over carbon fibre ( to hide little miss alignments )
