Kit review: SAS Wildthing

Well I have posted a build thread in the blog and shown how it goes together, It was a fairly easy build and the kit comes with almost everything that you need to get this glider gliding, I was actually quite pleasantly suprised at how much it does come with, I have come to earth quite a few times with a bump and other than the nose going a little wrinkly its stoodup to the abuse well, The covering does need a card wipe over every now and then just to make it nice again, ( covered as per instructions )

Set up was easy and the instructions give a very good starting point, I have adjusted a few things to suit my flying style ( hmmmm ) but overall the setup is very close to suggested. 

Flying, Well what can I say, Its a great flyer. It doesn't seem to have many pitfalls, I have not flown a bunch of gliders but compared to what I have flown this is one of the best. Its  easy to launch and fly's in all but the quietest of winds, I have never added any balast to it as I have not needed to, Its capable of alot of the manovers you would expect from the type of model, Stall turns are quite easy loops and rolls come with the higher wind speeds although the roll are axial there not what I would call rapid, You can loop over and over at the edge without loss of hight or speed, Then theres the quick low passes, There great loaded with speed droping down from a great height it will even give a speedy whistle as it passes ( Tims howl's )

So in summary, This is a great EPP alrounder, It may not be the fastest on the slope but you will definitly have a load of fun with it, If/When my Wildthing gets destroyed I will get another to replace it, Thanks again Andy Head

To add to Lee's comments, I would just say that this is one of the easiest ways of having cheap fun on the slope with a tough and proven model. It is very important not to skip the colored film covering stage, as this not only helps visibility, but the fibreglass weave tape underneth it will perish very quickly if exposed to sunlight.

I do know that Alan is "trying" to sort of retire, and therefore if you fancy one get hold of him quickly

I sold my Wildthing in the middle of last year but was having withdrawall symptoms, and was just about to buy another when I saw on alan's site the fussion. I am still a beginner really but the fussion is even better than the wild thing. I built it and covered it with profilm, but need a little more practice to get a perfect finish.

Apparantely Mark ( one of my clubmates who arrived in the afternoon with his dad and brother ...you may remember ) ended up with 7lbs of ballast on his wildthing that day !! Yes thats correct 7lbs !!

Mind you...was a tad windy wasnt it !

  Am starting about 3 builds at once at the moment & have read the comments on "wild thing" with interest & seen the pics.  I feel like making a balsa version based on the photos (all I have) Would you tell me whether she has a symmetrical wing section & if so what % thickness & also the L.E angle . Hopefully I shall be able to work out the rest for myself by making a tiny version first to get Cof G etc .Would appreciate any guidance as you seem to have a whole lot of experience with floaty things (& I dont just mean Timbo )  .I dont want to infringe copyright or what ever they call it but a delta is a delta is a delta isn't it

I have spoken to Alan just recently for a good while too, He's not giving up just yet, and Without speaking out of turn he is developing another model, Keep your eyes peeled folks this will be good if he gets it on sale.

All his models seem to be well designed, and good flyers. The old crunchie which I posted on here to try and identify a few months back, turns out to be a SAS "skizzo" - not sure on the spelling - but it flew really well on its maiden last weekend.

I'll second that Timbo, I once bought an SAS Star Delta from Alan at a show, and he duly spent the next hour or so telling me how to build it.

That guy could speak for England!
