The New year is almost here.

Time to get building.

Very good instruction book plus some extra info from the web on the Saito,my first four stroke ever and second IC engine in 30 years.

Made a start tonight on the P-40

Went through all the bits and found some  wrinkles on the wing tips, sorted them out with the iron, apart from the wrinkles the build quality and covering is very good.

What was your first engine for 30 years?

Nice blog by the way

Hi Peter

Sorry for the late reply trouble and strife on the home front , SC 46 fitted to my Boomerang (not flown yet).

The B-25 looks good , all the electrickery talk between you and Timbo has given me a headache..

I must gen up on the electrical side of things.

Cheers

Kelvin

Well started the P-40 tonight .

Following the instuctions, first job is to join the two  wing panels

Wing joiner

Centre line marked

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/P1010014-10.jpg

Leadin edge wing retaining dowels.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/P1010015-9.jpg

Dowels glued in place with epoxy.

Dry run to test how well the wings fit together,  wing joiner a nice tight  fit with no gaps between the root ribs.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/P1010016-9.jpg

The slight gap is because the wings are not supported whilst taking the picture.

Bit late to epoxy up tonight more tommorrow.

I know all this is a bit obvious, but I hope people who are new to the hobby will find this blog useful and realise  the ARTF still needs quite a bit or work and care to achieve a good flying model .

Joining of the wing halves.

Fitting the wing joiner using pins to keep it nice and true.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/6.jpg

Plenty of 30 minute epoxy on the wing joiner and both the root  wing ribs/cavity.

This is the fun and messy part as the epoxy oozes  out of the join  like something out of a 50's si-fi B movie.

I used a small clamp, the wing dowels and pair of bolts fitted in the wing bolt holes with rubber bands looped round  to help in keeping the the wing true as the epoxy cures.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/7.jpg

and a few strips of masking tape.

Cleaned off the excess epoxy with paper towel and rubbing alcohol, horrible job.

The Saito should pull her round no problem Kelvin. I found my Saito 100 in the H9 Spit' needed a good 5-6 tanks of running-in mind.....

Hi Kevin,

Re-gluing wing halves together.

Try putting masking tape on the surfaces to be glued and joined.

Smear Vaseline on the wing surfaces where the overspill will be.

Remove the masking tape and apply the glue.

Fit the two wing halves together and support as you wish.

When dry the excess glue should now come off without any trace on the finished surfaces.

Works for me Kevin.

Regards,

Arthur

Hi David,

Thanks for the info, good review on the Saito125 in a rival magazine. Regards running in what oil would you recommend to prep the engine before first running?

Hi Arthur,

Will give it a go when fitting the tailplane, cheers.

Fitted the wing bolt plate.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/7-1.jpg

Drilled the holes for the bolts.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/9.jpg

I use a low watt soldering iron to remove the covering prior to glueing the plate. This prevents damage when using a knife to the wood underneath possibly weakening the structure.

Next came the blind nuts for the wing bolts, I used a wing bolt  with oversize nuts for packing and a washer to pull the nuts in place .

Sorry about the double image, camera on the  wrong setting .

Good o' Kelvin. It's an unusual model but I always like the old P-40.

BTW, have you flown the ME109 yet?

Show/hide user stats

Hi David,

No not yet.

Have you seen the two failed launches of the 109 on youtube, I really felt sorry for the guy .

Fitted the belly pan tonight.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/14.jpg

This covers the wing join nicely and hides the epoxy overspill  .

Kelvin - re the ME109 - something not quite right there, ......first launch it look underpowered and the second looked like a balance issue?
Show/hide user stats

Hi David,

I agree, wonder what he was saying to his friend

Looks like he gave up,no more videos since.

Fitting the horizontal tailplane.

Test fit ,mark with a felt tip pen.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/15a.jpg

Remove the covering  top and bottom ( I use a low watt soldering iron).

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/16a.jpg

Apply epoxy to the exposed area top and bottom.

Elevator joiner in place .

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/17.jpg

Slide the tailplane back into position, check the fit  and the alignment.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/20.jpg

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/18.jpg

Strips of tape are to prevent any epoxy finger marks, made quite a neat job this time.

Apologies for the slow progress,   build time is limited at the moment (late night only)

Fitting the vertical stabilizer.

Remove tha covering.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/21.jpg

Epoxy into place.

http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc2/kelly2uk/22.jpg

Check the fin is at 90 degrees to the stabilizer.
