I have built Nigel's Ezee-fan jet and am almost ready to commit aviation, however, I cannot find any settings for the control surfaces either on the plan or in his article. Can anyone suggest the aileron and elevator travel limits for a first flight? I can then work from there to set them to my own preference. Thanks, Tony.

Sorry, can't help directly, but if you hunt around in the forum, you will find Nigel's email add, and you can ask him yourself - assuming he doesn't read your question first!

The Ezefan has flown, 1st flight very twitchy in pitch even though the C of G was spot on. Also it did not seem to flare out when landing, possibly due to landing with the fan off. After nose repair, 2nd flight was successful with the following control movements:-

Ailerons with full movement: 5/8" up 3/8" down. Not used this setting yet.

Ailerons on 50% rates 3/16" both up & down.

Elevator with full movement 7/16" up 5/16" down. Not used this setting yet.

Elevator on 50% rates 3/16" up & down with 35% exponential.

The EDF & ESC was from a foam Firebird with a 3S 1800ma lipo, the Ezefan flew well but needed a good chuck to get airborn. It was smooth and quick but slow in the roll with the lower rates on aileron.

Landing was done with the fan still turning and was a non event coming in for a greaser. Overall I am very pleased with Nigel's models having built the Fizza, the Tucano And the Eze- fan but please put the control movement settings on the plan, this saves a lot of guessing. Look forward to Nigel's next offering. Tony

Tony   Thanks for the settings. I've built one (scaled up slightly)36 inch span -not flown yet but I,ve a 4s battery /FA-om 480 2300KVoutrunner/415 Watt set up/45 Amp ESC./70 mm fan.Your settings shall be fed into my tranny if I can manage it .Have a mental block when it comes to all things digital .Sometimes think I should never got involved in lecktrickery but it is another challenge ( PS thank you TIMBO.)

Do you get the differential on the ailerons by the old method ie mechanical leverages etc or dial it in ? I suppose what I'm saying are they on channels 1 & 6 or do you use a Y lead & set them up angularly on the horns &/or servo arm ?(my preferred method but of course more work intensive when it is required to change things .I will try your settings - the increase in size is minimal so shouldn't be a problem .By the way -Let me know the results of using full deflections/movements if you dare to try them !

Cheers  Grumpy Myron

PSS  Did you velcro the ESC to the boom fairing ? Mine is slotted into the fuselage just behind the EDF unit .Neater & cooled on both sides I thought ?

Hi Myron,

I do not know why I have got differential on full movement, I did not do this deliberately, surely it should show up also on the lower rate setting, unless the movement is too small?  Differential is not necessary on such a small span model, also if I do use the full deflections I will certainly dial in about 40% exponential on the ailerons and possibly decrease & then increase the movement gradually until I am happy with the roll rate. The ailerons are in chanels 1 & 6 on my FF9. I did as Nigel suggested and mounted the ESC on Velcro on the side of the tail boom running all the cables along the side of the skid. I did try to launch the model by the under arm method but it just sank to the ground so maybe my set up is not as powerful as his. A club member gave me a good positive javelin launch & it went away well. My Tucano used to go away easily with a very gentle under arm launch, so much so that a club member was heard to comment "Look at that, dead casual!" It now has an undercarriage so I can use Jurby airfield's runway, one of our club's sites. Let me know how yours flies, Timbo & Myron.

Safe landings, Tony

When hand launching the Eze-fan beware of the cables running along the skid, it is very easy to catch & disconnect them. The origonal query about the differential on the ailerons, I think this happened because the horns, although equal, are not exactly on the hinge line, thus giving more up than down. It does not affect the flight though.

We have just had our annual two weeks fly in on the Isle of Man, camping on Jurby,  weather wasn't brilliant but we have enjoyed the flying, both power on Jurby airfield & sloping on the hills. Unlike theUK most land is Government owned so permission is not required to slope except in a very few sensitive arears. The lift off the sea is awesome & smooth. We also had our social events including the usual kipper & banana BBQ, the former is the starter & the latter the pudding, bring your own main course & enjoy. I'm looking forward to next year's event.

Tony.
