I have just recently become very interested in the hobby of flying model aircraft.I went out and bought up half a dozen mags on the subject and ended up with a Silverlit Gyrotor heli and now an E-Flight Ember both of which I have very much enjoyed.I now want to move up to flying what is called a trainer.I have looked at two models which are the Chris Foss Uno Wot and the ARC Cessna 177 Cardinal.I am at an absolute loss as to what to buy because at the moment I have no experience in these things. Please can any body help me in this regard; it will be very much appreciated.Thank you. David. ( I really have caught the bug and hope to go further on in this hobby )

Hi David and welcome, we've been playing with the little Ember and think it's a super little model - glad you did too.

The Uno Wot is a traditional kit while the Cessna is an ARTF model, perhaps better looking into the bargain. So I guess it's a case of whether you wish to build. My recommendation would be the Uno Wot as it's very robust, easily repaired and flies well. Are you in the process of joining a club along with the BMFA? I ask this as you'll need some help with either model.

Hi David.

There's any number of trainers out there and they all do pretty much what it says on the tin. Most hobby shops will do a deal with the model, all the r/c gear and whatever you need to get started, all at a reasonable price.

Do join a club though. It may seem a little intimidating and no-one likes to be the new boy, but they'll make you welcome and have you flying solo without the heartache of repeated (expensive) crashes, thereby saving you money and grey hairs at the same time!

Hi David

I' ve got a Tutor 40 which is a good model very stable, easy to assemble, and flies well. I have just joined my local club and found it to be the best thing I have done, the help and advice is free and all the guys are friendly and willing to help out a novice. We also get a discount in the model shop, every little helps!

Hi David,

There is so much more satisfaction when you fly something that you have built yourself. Also, you get a real understanding how it all works, and you are your own quality control department..Chris Foss kits are a real pleasure  (I have an xtra wot in my workshop) Fine quality bits, and great instructions....Without a doubt, I'd go for that

Thanks for all your help and advice, it is really appreciated. I am opting for the Chris foss designed Uno-Wot which I will pick up from Blackburn Models on Wednesday. Thanks again everyone.

Tutor 40 and the Calmato are the best trainers i've flown so far, they both perform well in windy conditions and will go well past learning to takeoff and land giving you an introduction to aerobatics.
