This was listed by the BMFA as a 3 day Fly-In. from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th May.
On arrival at the venue in the early evening of Friday, I wasn't too sure that I was in the right place. We were already a day late and thought that we would be met by a lot of activity both camping and flying wise. I found myself in a field of grass which was non too level with a couple of caravans parked up on one side. There were no obvious facillities for camping at all. However I did spot two portable loos on the approach to what I gathered to be the flying flield about 300 yards away down a dirt drive and after investigating some outbuildings adjacent to the 'Camp Site' I found a water tap with a length of hose attatched, so at least we were able to fill up our motor home with fresh water.
We then drove down to the flying field, the grass of which was very similar to that of the camp site having only been cut by an agricultural mower a few days previous to the event. I enquired as to where the flying strip was and was simply pointed in the general direction of the wide open space of the field. I quickly gathered that there was no prepared strip as such which was a big disappointment for me as all the five models I had brought with me relied on short grass for take off and landing.
The following day out of desperation I thought I would risk giving my Alfa Mig 15 an airing. I was more concerned about the landing rather than the hand launch but fortunately the sudden abrupt halt on touch down didn't appear to do any damage. However I wasn't so lucky with my starfighter which ended up with a bloody nose and a sliced off wing tip tank. At this point I decided to abandon any more attempts at flying. I only saw two other electric models fly, each once only. The rest of the flying was done mainly by IC ARTF sport models.
There was nothing of any real interest there and this was emphasised by the rather low turn out of modellers most of whom were local model club members. There were no Trade stands, refreshment vendors or public address on the Saturday. How many members of the general public turned up on the Sunday I do not know as we high tailed it out of there come Saturday evening feeling cold and somewhat deflated.
