Hi guys, this is my Ultrafly P-51D Mustang I modified from the standard bare foam version. It has a full internal cockpit, big enough for a pilot figure including his legs!

Components were fabricated from depron,so the pilot's seat, instenal batteries under the canopy, radio box etc are all depron and painted.

The canopy slides (manually only) using magnets in ABS runners with piano wire underneath them.

She flies with a 4 blade GWS prop, which is close to a scale Mustang prop. This is a recent addition and works very well indeed.

The model is covered with WBPU (Poly C in this case) and 5 gram silkspan tissue.Paint is Tamiya acrylic, panel lines were etched into the skin before painting, the model.Weathering is just pencil lead applied with a digit.

I made the fuel tanks from hollowed blue foam, and she flies very well with these fitted.

The model has 'almost scale' gear doors and function, has retracts and flaps which are very useful, even on this small electric foamie!

I'm carving a pilot from foam today,if anyone is interested in the process,do let me know and we'll get a pictorial thread going with tips etc.

Thankyou

Matt

Looks great Matt. As I've asked before, how about a new thread covering a step by step conversion of a foamy? Perhaps the E-Flite T'Bolt?

I would love to see a thread on how to carve a foam pilot.

And is that canopy articulated?

Ok, I have made 2 pilots,I'll start a thread when I have more time.

Shaun, yes,it slides back and forth, sheer indulgence

I have some more Sea Fury and Mustang videos if you want to see them?

Check 'em on! How about a close up of the canopy operating and the mechanism?

That is a stunning Mustang Matt,  how easy is to etch the panel lines on the cured Poly C and Tissue? I've never used any covering method on foam but am interested in giving it a go and would like to understand how you get so much detail on the surface

After covering, let the Poly C cure for a couple of days, then use a ballpoint pen to etch the lines in...don't apply too much pressure though!

Give it a try Gemma, but sand the bumps off the foam berfore covering, and fill any other dents with lightweight filler (polycell do a good one)

Thanks for your kind comments

Warch out for my up and coming Sea Fury T.20 conversion,I'm covering that in silkspan and Poly C too.

Thanks for the tips Matt, I have a GWS P38 to build and had already thought it could do with covering so will have a bash with that. I'll look forward to seeing the T.20
