It is time to go for my first Large Model.I have decided on the Wot Wots XL for my first large model already owning a standard Wot Wots and love the way it fly.I thought this would make a good first large model..I am not going down the petrol engine route but sticking with a good 4 stoke glow engine so it is going to be either a Laser 155 or a Laser 180 ( be contacting you soon Jon ),still to decide on which of these Laser to buy yet?.I need a bit of guidance with the radio gear to put in the Wot Wots .It will be Futaba and I have a lot of spare Futaba 148 servos .Will these be OK in a model of this size or should I upgrade to more expensive servos ?Also will the standard 4.8 receiver battery be OK or again will I need to upgrade the receiver battery ???????.Need to make sure the radio gear is up to the job

When choosing servos think about the job they have to do. ie, the size of control surface, the speed of the model, the deflection of the controls etc.

As an example, a 1/4 scale tiger moth has large surfaces, reasonable deflection but low speed so 3.5kg or slightly more is plenty.

An 80'' WWII fighter has relatively small ailerons and elevators, will run quite small deflections but has a high speed. So perhaps a little more, 5 or 6kg being plenty. The flaps however are usually huge and have high deflection, best go up to 8 or 9kg.

A 3d model has massive surfaces, massive deflection and a reasonable speed. Go for all the power you can.

In the case of the WWXL i would probably use a 6v 3000mah ninh sub-c based battery and servos around the 5-6kg torque mark. Its reasonably fast, with moderately sized surfaces and moderate surface deflections so servos of above bog standard are needed but nothing really mad.

I’m using Hitec 645mg....but then I’m using a petrol motor. I like to use metal gears with petrol 2t motors.

I second both the above posts

In my XL I'm running a DLE 20 with HS645MG and a sub C 3300 standard 5cell NIMH.

Beware of 2 things

Firstly, the depth of the fin slot, I had to extend mine to fit correctly

Secondly, the quality of the hardware, particularly the clevises and threaded pushrods, they can be of poor quality and can fail in flight.

Metal gears are fairly cheap so I stick to them for large models, and ditch the 4.8v! My batteries of choice are a couple of LiFe jobs for large models.

too right. All the pesky customers keep buying them. I list 30 on the site, gone in 3 days. Bah! smile p

Anyway the 645 is way overkill but as its not that expensive its hardly an issue.

Harper, best get your mills running then.

Go to sleep, counting boxes on shelves. Eat your 7 a day, make love sparingly, go for a run, before breakfast..

The only comment I would add are

1) use sub C cells for the receiver battery

2) make sure you have a decent switch up to the job. If you are using a mechanical switch don't go for cheap no name job.
