Hi all,

I've just finished building mine. I'll post some pictures when i stick the front end on again. This is my first ever Build of an RC plane. I have built plenty of free flights before. A couple of things before i ask my question. I have used the same motor Tim mentioned. The all up weight is just over 16oz(I guess i'll learn to make things lighter).

I took it out for its maiden flight today. It was a lovely calm day. I pushed the throttle up and gave it a gentle throw and to my horror the left wing dipped alarmingly and crashed into the ground. I'm pretty sure this is due to the motor turning the plane. Am i right in suggesting this. How can i counteract this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Neil

Neil,

Was this your first ever experience of actually flying an RC model? Not an encouraging start, I'll admit, so sympathies.

Assuming you have a couple of degrees of right side thrust built-in, and there are no warps in the wings or tail, the rudder is centred, etc, then there's no real way to tell without seeing the model itself.

Do both wings have the same incidence?

Mine had another flight today and performed as flawlessly as usual.

Hello Neil,it depends on how much power you had on the motor at launch and how much of a throw into wind you gave it,also was the prop turning in the right direction,i have had all these in the past and did affect the flight of the plane, bit of a learning curve.
I noticed you said" gentle throw",even though it's a small model it still needs a bit of a good throw to get some lift into the wings before the motor takes over, i hope you didn't sustain too much damage, good luck with your next attempt....ian

Thanks Ian, I never even paid any attention to which way the prop should turn. If i'm looking at the front of the model which way should it turn? I haven't been put off. There is a fair bit of damage but "We can rebuild him!"

Viewed from the front of the model, the prop must be turning anti-clockwise. I'm assuming that you could feel the prop wash from behind the model?

It was set up right then. Having reviewed your build photos again i don't think mine
had anywhere near enough right thrust. I'll build some in this time. Oh did i see mention that there were some videos of yours knocking around somewhere?

Hi Neil,i am still into my build along with a bigger model from a RCM&E plan called the Zulu ET,there has been a lot of work into the Zulu and i am nearly there,so i dont want any mistakes on lift off,my Pixi is not too far away,my club mate who started after me and has flown his successfully can be the test pilot.
Best of luck with your build, can we see some pics when its re-built--before launch in case the worst should happen,i do hope not....ian. that Tim fellow is so smug,

Hiya Neil,

That little motor kicks out a lot of torque when attached to a lightweight model like this, so that bit of sidethrust is really essential!

I'm not aware of any video of mine being taken, unless it was at last years RCM+E Fly-in at Walsall. Does that sound familiar at all?

I'll second what Tim says here....I built a DB Mini Tyro which is a 32" span R/E model from about 1970 but converted it to electric. I reckoned on about 100 watts as it weighed about 1lb.....BIG MISTAKE.....at full throttle the motor tried to roll the whole plane over which is pretty hard to stop with just a rudder....!!

I propped it down to about 50 watts max & it flys just fine....it cruises on just over half power so 30watts or so!!!

I'm thinking that the Pix _e will be about the same so go for a fine pitch prop & keep those watts down!!!

In response to the many requests received, the CNC/laser parts set for Tim's model is now available from the plans service.

Forgive me if I'm being dumb here, but how do the wings attach?

Hi!

The wings are each equipped with a carbon fibre dowel that protrudes from the root rib, and then slips into an aluminium tube within the fuselage. There's a smaller dowel nearer the trailing edge to give the correct incidence.

Attaching the strut under the wing ensures that in flight, the wing panels are actually pushed in towards the fuselage.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Yes that helps a lot seems to make sense. I think I will be building this little plane quite soon. Are carbon fibre dowels fairly easy things to get hold of?

Eifion,

Given the light weight of this model, you'd get away using ordinary dowelling if carbon is hard to come by.

Hi Eifion,

I used Aluminium tubing which accomodates 3mm carbon rod purchased from nearest model shop in Leeds and tooth pick for wing incidence angle.

Have you started your build ?

some pics would be nice when you have the opportunity..good luck...Iansmiley.

Haven't started yet, just about to order the CNC pack. Have been looking for something to get back into building for a while and this looked perfect. Just love the vintage look. Thinking of a cream and dark red colour scheme at the moment, though that may change.

I'll post some pictures as it progresses.
