Hi Guys..

I've been into RC cars since I was 7.. I've worked thru the usual Tamiya stuff, a few Kyosho's, inc a 1/8 Scooby Landmax (MP6) and eventually got a 1/6 23cc FG Marder, with a beautiful Pajero shell..

05 Big cars

Thing is, I really like scale stuff, and all the IC cars (and this included all aircraft) sound like Nitro or in the case of the Marder, a chainsaw.. And this is not acceptable for scale..

I'd love to build a nice scale car that sounds like a car..

I got really excited as a teenage when OS bought out a Flat-Four boxer 4s, which is exactly what I have now, in my real Scooby, but it still sounds like a nitro..!! No off-beat burble or owt'...

Just watched a maiden vid on here with an in-line 4, which sounded nice, but not what i'm after..

The best so far is the Conley 1/4 scale V8, but that's like $5000+... !!

SO... Question is, other than lovely Moki radials, is there an IC that sounds like a car.. ?!?! This would include exhaust combo's I presume, to get the 'sound'...

I fully appreciate the complexities of a scaled engine not sounding real (smaller capacity, higher tickover, etc), but wandered if you IC nuts had ever come across summut..

I know we're aircraft on here, but you guys know more about various IC than anyone else..

The other, probably way cheaper option, is to go leccy with a sound gen, in which case, the boating crew are the best peeps to ask..

Luv

Chrisie.. xx

Hmm let me think about this, NO, if you want realism, go for electric, with a bendini sounds system

can't help you with another engine type but i've had a look at the real scooby cylinder layout/firing order and the o/s one and there the same.

The scooby sound actually comes from the exhaust header set up.Cylinders 1 and 3 have there own system and 2 and 4 theres. The result is the burble as the 2 pairs fire on alternating sides of the car.

Don' know if it'd work but if you linked the exhausts on yours 1 with 3 and 2 with 4 you may recreate some off beat burble.

I think Alan is right....the only thing that sounds like a car engine really is a car engine....unless you fake it with an electronic recording....there are some great sound generators for big CAT diesels as used by the boat & tank guys but I'm not sure you'll find one for a 2 litre turbo charged flat 4....thinking

Is this anywhere near the sound you're after?

Don't worry if it isn't - it's music to the ears whatever! Turn the volume up and enjoy the experience!

What is really amazing is that it achieves the real distinction between prop noise on approach and the exhast sound on passing. Fantastic!

RLG

I am not so sure the Scooby flat 4 actually sounds that great although very distinctive but then so is a VW Beetle!

To get the note you will need quite long piipes connected as Del says but with the relatively high revs any beat tends to be lost.

I am not sure this Scooby is still burbling!wink 2

Simon, can you re-size the video to 450 please, thanks.

Nice Simon.. Been to a few forest rallies, and there's nothing like it in todays world of H&S..

Martin... WOW... I saw a big Corsair at Longmarston with a 400cc Moki radial, just a few weeks ago, and thought that was the best noise i'd ever heard, but that's just pip'ed it to no. 1....

What is it..??? It's a damn awesome sound... !!!

Thought it might be a turbo-prop, but the opening shot shows a open panel with inerds that dont look turbine..?!

** Just checked, it's an IL200.. So like the PT maiden vid on here, but 4 times bigger.. !!

As it banks round and dives down, it whines like i've never heard on rc..!!
