388 forum posts 45 photos | I got to fly my Pulse xt60 today. I had 6 really good flights but on the seventh flight, the engine started to slutter a bit. I came round for a landing but had to overshoot,so opened her up to go round again. The engine did a bit more spluttering but kept going. I landed her on the second attempt, walked over to pick up,and saw that the muffler was missing. The muffler had sheared of at the muffler end. I did have a quick look for it but it could have been anywhere. Im really suprised that the saito kept running and got me around another circuit before i managed to land.Looks like i am going to have to buy amother muffler and manifold pipe but what a cost. If anybody has a muffler and manifold pipe hanging around,i would gladly buy it. |

960 forum posts 124 photos | I had exactly the same problem with an ASP 91, although mine was left dangling when I landing - retained by the fuel pipe pressure feed to the tank. Looking back, i think it was because when the plane was sat in its craddle in the back of the car, the exhaust must have been resting of the boot floor and taking some stress on the joint, causing a stress fracture over time. Simple fix with a new elbow and exhaust.

388 forum posts 45 photos | Can anyone tell me about flexible mufflers? I have been looking around on the internet and see you can get these pipes that look long and thin with a pressure fitting on them. Is this all you need?Do you still have to attach a muffler on the end or is that it? Edited By flyeruk on 21/07/2012 23:16:39 |

| 276 forum posts 11 photos | The flexible pipes are handy when you need to fit things in a confined space. I have one fitted to a Saito 91 in a Hangar 9 Fokker DVII. There is a right angle adaptor at the exhaust port, then the flexible pipe snakes around and connects to a home made box. This is a section of square aluminium extrusion with a cap screwed on each end, no baffles inside. A short stub (The original exhaust manifold) connects to the end and convey the exhaust out underneath the fuselage. The whole thing fits inside the cowling and it is certainly quiet enough. We don't have a noise meter at our club so I can't do any proper comparisons, but it is certainly quiet enough and sounds very much in keeping with the type of plane. By quiet enough I mean that most other planes are louder. I beleive that some do find that with a four stroke the flexible pipe alone is enough. I'm not sure how much tank pressure you would get, although of course the nipple goes at the engine end of the pipe. I'll post a picture of the installation in the Fokker. Note that the 91 is actually slightly larger than they recommend, so things are a little cramped, but it all fits in nicely. It has a remote glow connection and a remote fuel adaptor, so the only reason to open the cowling is when something inside rattles. (The lead under the engine came a bit loose at one time! The engine is tilted slightly, as per the recommendation as this puts the cylinder head under the high side of the cowling. John |

960 forum posts 124 photos | Just Engines has them. I bought one to use in my 90 sized Decathlon so that i could extend and reangle the muffler to come outof the bottom of the cowling. They fit between the engine and your existing muffler, so that you can still use your muffler pressure nipple. Cost about a tenner. Here's the plane before I fitted the extension and whilst setting her up, you can see the muffler is just covering the firewall in gloop; the extension made the muffler 'stick' out of the bottom of the cowling (when fitted) by about 1/2 its length. Much better. Edited By Christian Ackroyd on 22/07/2012 18:26:33 |

388 forum posts 45 photos | I have taken the plunge and ordered the Turbo Header from the states. Expensive but looks and sounds much better quality than the original. I will post a small report with some pictures when it arrives if anybody is interested. |
