New models from E-Flite

We saw these models at Nuremburg in February and they've been (particularly the P-38) eagerly awaited ever since. For the first time Horizon Hobby UK have included details in a press release so they should be on the shelves soon. The Lightning is particularly impressive and is pre-painted and 95% pre-built. It features detailed panel lines, a cockpit and pilot figure along with pre-hinged control surfaces and fitted control horns. The wing panels are of the plug-in variety and a 'no glue required' boast is made!

The model can be flown with a brushed or brushless set-up. The two recommended speed 480's with gearboxes would probably be ignored in favour of a couple of 890Kv Park 450 outrunners (or equivalent) by most flyers even when the cost of an extra 25 amp ESC is factored into account. In both cases a 3s 2200 mAh Li-Po will provide the power.

Spec -

  • Wingspan - 48" (1219mm)
  • Length - 35" (889mm)
  • Weight - 33 - 40oz (936 - 1134g)
  • R/C required - 3 channel with 3 sub-micro servos or 4 channel with 6 sub micro servos if using rudder and landing gear.
  • RRP - £79.99

The curiously named Sobre 3D is a 32" park-fly shockie made from 3mm Depron. It has been engineered to accept E-Flite's new variable pitch propeller system and side force generators can also be fitted as desired.

    Spec -

  • Wingspan - 32" (845mm)
  • Length - 34" (875mm)
  • Weight - 7.5 - 9.25oz (215 - 260g)
  • Motor - Park 300 or 370 outrunner.
  • RRP - £34.99

I have seen the P38 at my LMS where we had the components out of the box for an oggle.......VERY impressive except for full matt finish.....with invasion stripes.......???

I have their Thunderbolt, which flies perfectly well on the supplied base brushed package, ROG's well on suitable surface, hand launches readily with a minimal throw, climbs out well, loops from level flight, four point rolls (with optional rudder control fitted), etc, etc.

Unless you want to fly it as a 3D plane (and if so why on earth are you buying a Warbird?!!) the brushed setup is perfectly suitable and adequate.

The ONLY reason for going brushless on the P38 IMHO is to avoid the minimal risk of total loss of one motor.

    Ducks and runs for cover....................................
