  1. So a pleasant evening setting up the radio, and all is good. C of G is about right with 1500mAh 2S LiFe Rx pack balanced on the cowl so should be good. AUW ready to fly, minus fuel. 4.38kg or 9.66lbs Pretty pleased with that......means the model is eligible for light scale Cheers Danny

  2. I had a much better day at the club field yesterday, sunny, warm, light winds and some D-Day anniversary warbird flying - particularly enjoyable was the loose formation flying and beating up the field in a Spitfire three ship gaggle. Great fun. The it was the D-Day anniversary today, so loaded up the car with invasion-stripe clad aeroplanes and made an early start. The weather at dawn was magnificent, but a few hours later had clouded over and the trip over the hills was down to 20 yards visibility in places and cold. Undeterred I got to the field and unloaded the themed fleet. During the afternoon it got sunnier and warmer and conditions were good for flying. As the day went on I flew every one of these models at least once and had a great day, including a successful couple of flights with my CML Douglas C-47 Dakota. It flew quite nicely, but I had the impression that slowing her up too much she would love to drop a wing. All in all another great day, with good company and good flying. ? 3. Not much done over the weekend due to celebrating too much and having fun. Now I’m back at work I may get some work done ? Made up some control horns for the elevators and epoxied in place, should be able to finish off and cover the elevators this week. The rudder will have to wait until I flip the fuz again in future but that all depends on when the retracts arrive. Have a good week everyone ?

  5. Time for another one. This is one of the smaller models and is a Kawasaki Hein. Wingspan 1390mm. It looks like a fairly complex build and I shall be making this for electric power (just to complicate things more !). The parts are cut and the building board is cleared. As with the others, this is a proof of concept build so I don't need to fly it. If anybody is interested in finishing it off, let me know.

  7. A work of art as usual Danny, it's nice to see an I,C, model with everything enclosed. Simon, in the past I have made scale models and spent hours on them, I never worried about putting them in the air as I had the pleasure of building them, I would not like the experience of spending a lot of money on a ready to fly and seeing it crash on the first flight.

  8. Truly spectacular. However I really don't know if I could ever pick up the courage to actually maiden such a master piece after all the hours you have put into it..

  9. Thanks Graham, it has been fun trying new techniques, that's for sure ? When I have done a few engine runs and range checks I will see if I can find a cameraman and take it for a circuit or two ? Cheers Danny

  10. Fantastic Danny, well done. Thanks for sharing this; I've thoroughly enjoyed your meticulous approach. I've found it really inspiring. Graham

  11. The underlying theory is that an antenna has a dead zone in the direction the wire is pointing. So a second antenna that is not pointing in exactly the same direction has a different dead zone. 90degrees is best, but the 90 degree pair can then be in any orientation.

  12. It can be rather unpredictable I’m afraid. Some of the bigger sellers are now claiming that they include UK VAT in their prices which they collect onto the UK government - they may say this but I’m not convinced that they actually do it. But if they do then there is nothing extra to pay. Otherwise, there is VAT and duty on import and the shipping companies add there fees to. VAT is easy - 20% on the total. Duty is more complicated - depends on value and whether it gets classed as a gift or not. Admin fees vary with shipping companies - I usually guesstimate £15 Of course there is still a chance that it sneaks through but now that the shippers can make a nice little earner with their admin fees (which are often higher than the actual shipping) this is less common. Buying from a business the purchase shouldn’t be classed as a gift, in which case anything over £135 is subject to duty and the rate depends on the type of product - unfortunately there isn’t a convenient list - I guesstimate 3% So for your purchase best case figure - £0 worst case figure - £56 and it could be anywhere in between as Far Eastern companies often understate shipment value. Cheers, Nigel

  13. Mine is balanced on the main spar. It does great aileron/elevator rolls. Lots of rudder movement and plenty of power. Hit full rudder and it goes over onto its back, apply down elevator to hold the nose up and she come round in a roll. It does make other club members wonder in amazement!!!

  14. An update on the FW 190 retracts issue. I have managed to source a new, but well discounted, set of the now-discontinued E-Flite 60-120 retracts with 81degree retract angle. These were designed (I think) for the H9 ME109 kit. Good news is they fit easily into the Black Horse FW 190 model and the oleo struts that come with the kit are a perfect fit in the E Flite retracts. It gives nearly the correct angled look (81 degrees vs. 75 degrees) when extended and the wheels sit nicely on the ground when down. The info might help someone else wanting to replace the air units on the BH kit.

  17. Trial fit ready for primer and basecoat cowling blocks glued and screwed Now with added holes! I'm well pleased with the cowling with no voids and a uniform thickness 9* I did have to move the engine up a 1/4" and fill the unwanted holes ?

  18. On Thursday I had a mid air with the Tempest, it took the wing off and the fuselage nose dived from 50ft, the impact pushed the internal structure on one side back 20mm. It is now ready to fly again just waiting for the wind to drop. The wing apart from a small hole was undamaged and the rest of the airframe from the cowl back was intact. There has been a lot said about Brian Taylor models being not much use on club sites, I have had a lot of flights with this model and the fact I was able to repair it quickly after what would have been a bin job with a modern model, I had a similar crash with a VQ Mustang which went in vertical an it was like matchwood, total bin job.

  21. Hi Paul, The 4 engined wing in the background is from the Sunderland's stablemate, the Stirling, my own design at 72" span and all electric using the same power train as the Sunderland, I put a build blog on this forum, "build and design Short Stirling" which starts with the hand drawing of the plans right through to maiden flight. Built 2016 Maiden flight, a very short flight indeed that resulted in some repairs to the u/c, just like the full size. Still waiting for the second flight. I've been holding off the second flight as I wanted to photograph both the Stirling and Sunderland, I think that would make a cracking shot. We have the same taste in aircraft, here's my TN Beaufighter with a pair of Irvine 46's up front The torpedo is on a servo operated spring release. Built 2014 and still waiting to be maidened. Keep meaning to make stronger u/c legs these were my first attempt and look a little flimsy. Thank you Murat. Regards Robert

  22. These certainly build into an impressive model - our club chairman Sandy has built one and I saw it fly yesterday for the first time -lovely long ROG from short grass and a majestic appearance in the air, with a backdrop of the Scottish hills. With the dark clouds it could almost be the North Atlantic in some of the pictures.

  23. Hi All, After spending some time away from the Sunderland I have returned back to her and she is now almost painted but I have a bit of a problem. Having covered the airframe in encapsulation film and rubbed it all down with 800 grit wet and dry to give a key to the paint, well it did not work that well. The main colour being white I used Halfords white primer then masked off for Spectrum dark sea grey. On carefully pulling away the masking tape some of the white came away too. Today, my original intention was to paint the dark green, but instead I masked off the grey using "frog" tape, a low tack masking tape, and touched up the white, this too pulled away the grey. It seems like an never ending cycle. So frustrating, and the pulled away areas are not in the green. What to do. Live with it and have it looking tatty very quickly, or strip it back and start again? That's all for now Regards Robert
