Posted by Michael Black on 22/08/2014 12:53:16: Okay keeping on the same theme how about this http://www.stevewebb.co.uk/index.php?pid=WOTSWOTDL&area=Aircraft says docile enough for the less experienced mick Hi Michael, Don't know if you have bought your Ultimate yet but I saw your question about the Wots Wot and thought I'd reply. I am pretty much in the same position you are. I am self taught and have only just joined a club where I need to my cert (down here it is the Bronze Wings cert that I have to do). I started on a Minimag and then got myself a PA Addiction. I wanted to jump straight into a Ultimate AMR but was talked out of it and into the Addiction as a better alternative. The Addiction is a great aircraft and flying on low rates, it is just fine for my lack of skills but really, it shouldn't be a second aircraft IMHO. Due to other issues and the need for an aircraft of at least a 0.40 size for the Bronze Wings Cert., I ended up getting a Wots Wot and have only a couple of flights so far, I love it. stable and docile enough for someone advancing past the basics but still very capable of quite a bit more. Being heavier and bigger than the Minimag or Addiction, I really notice how much better it handles wind. So, well worth looking at.
  2. Posted by Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 02/11/2014 17:48:27: Well - I can't say I've tested all combinations Phillip - but I used the 5020-490 in a recent conversion. OS predicted: 47A and 1.18kW with a 14x7 prop. I actually got: 56A and 1.28kW (that's static on the ground) So the current was a bit adrift but the power was pretty spot on. So I would hesitate to describe their figures as "fiction"! BEB Thanks. Using the data given by OS and comparing with what you got, you are right, they are pretty much spot on. Using the points and calculating the current at 1280w, you get 52A. Compared to the 56A you tested, it is pretty much the same result. I have a 5020-490 in an aircraft and I'm really happy with it but I have no idea how it compares to anything. I am considering putting a 5025-375 into a larger aircraft and am a bit nervous. If the numbers published are spot on as they seem to be, then I have nothing to worry about.
  3. Has anyone come up with some numbers for the OS motors? I hear the data on the OS site is fiction.
  4. Charles, Please let us know what you think of the 15x6 on the OS 490.
  5. I just maidened mine yesterday. Lovely flight/bad landing So, I have a little work to do on it. I'm using an OS Motor OMA-5020-490 with a 14x8.5e prop and the OCA-170HV esc. The battery is a Turnigy A-Spec 6s 3200mHa. The dimensions of the battery are 138x43x40mm and it fits very nicely with a tiny bit of room to spare which I need because I've got the JR dmss voltage telemetry unit in-between the battery and the esc and although not bulky, it is long and doesn't bend so it takes up a fair amount of space under the battery hatch. I have also pushed the battery slightly forward by putting a small piece of 3mm square balsa on the battery tray behind the battery. Completely unnecessary but at the time, I thought it would ensure the tray stops where it should and no chance of the battery being hit every time I insert and remove. With this setup, I ended up ever so slightly forward of the recommended CG. Having flown it, I think even the recommended CG is too far forward so I plan to put a bit of weight in the back and see how it is on the next flight. Throttle didn't go past half way except on takeoff and even then, it wasn't at full. I think I might drop back to a 14x7e prop next. After first flight, I was really impressed at how stable and solid this aircraft is in the air. I haven't done any aerobatics with it yet as I wasn't about to try on the first flight, but I am very impressed so far. Can't wait to get it up again.
  6. The size has been the problem. I've been busy making cardboard cutouts of batteries to see which ones would fit and I've found one that is 6S 4000 mAh that would fit...just, in theory, anyway. I might step back to 3700mAh or a 3300mAh to give me a bit more breathing room. I've also bought a Dubro metal hub tailwheel. It isn't going to add much weight but I'm hoping that due to the distance, the increased moment arm will help compensate, at least a smidgen. Hearing your experience, it doesn't sound like it is going to be enough.
  7. I was thinking of going with an OS5020-490 (I have one on the shelf so it makes sense to use it is possible) on a 14x7 prop. I can fit a 6S battery but the biggest is only 4000mAh. That is 695g so quite a heavy battery and the motor is 350g. Compare that to what David Ashby used: a 502g battery with a 346g motor. That gives me a heavier front end which is why I'm concerned about the CG. I haven't looked at the weight of the smaller batteries such as the 6S 3000mAh but should do so. With your setup, are you nose heavy, bang on, tail heavy and did you have to add weight? Cheers,
  8. For those flying electric, what motor and batteries are you going with? Down on this side of the world, I can't get the Quantum 55 or the High Energy Lipos. So, I'm trying to work out a combination that will physically fit but also not throw off the CG. Could you post your motor/battery combinations? Thanks
  9. I ordered one of these (electric option) after reading David Ashby's article. There are a number of issues so far.... However, the build quality (wood) of this aircraft is really good. I am a bit disappointed that there are parts missing as there really isn't much of an excuse for that. The kit seems to be missing the nylon bolt used to hold the battery tray and the aileron control rods. Since I am still building this kit, I may find other things missing.... +1 on the poor covering issue.
  10. I have been giving my father RCM&E for a few years now without problems. However, I want to renew it again for him this year. Unforetunately, since I moved during the year, I haven't received the renewal notification for his subscription. Going to the subscription renewal section of the website, the site asks for the surname, postcode and the subscription number. It even tells me I can find the subscription number on the envelope containing an issue of the publication. Since the subscription is sent to my father's house, I don't have the subscription number. Please help! Philip Edited By David Ashby - RCME on 20/12/2012 12:23:48
