  1. The dolly on the right was used on a FW 190d. The 2 wires, about 1/14 inch long, just plugged into 2 tubes , very loosely, in the bottom of the fuselage. The tail rested on the ground. The other dolly was used on Curtis Hawk. The rear of the dolly hooked over the trailing edge. The “ hooks” are from flexible foam about 1/4” thick. The tail of the model is on the ground & could be steered with the rudder. I think that next time I might extend the dolly fit a tail wheel. Ron, what size motor do you recommend & have you an ideal position for the cg? Thanks for the excellent videos. sorry about the inverted photos.6
  2. Here are 2 dollies I have used. Both have worked perfectly, never had a failed launch.
  3. Shark face was my 2nd ever radio model. Built from the original free plan with a cox 0.49 & macgregor s/c radio & a conquest escapement. Great fun. I worked with Eric Clutton for a year. Happy days.
  4. Hi, in 70+ years of modelling I’ve never done a Spitfire , or a Mustang , or a 109. it’s a gap that really needs filling. A Sea Fury would be very tempting. I very much like Hurricanes but have already done the Brian Taylor one. A friend gave me a Mosquito that was built for ic, I have converted it to electric but have not dared to try a maiden. It’s the very old CAP design for those of you with a long memory. The pointy wings & lack of washout put me off. So many models & not enough time.
  5. I’ve very much enjoyed rereading this thread. Were the plans ever published? I would enjoy building one of these.
  6. Richard, red23 for me please. It’s good to see the numbers growing. I think you are onto a winner here.
  7. Just confirming my order. One 190 & one Tempest please.
  8. Hi Richard, a couple of years ago I built a FW190 d. Enlarged from a Clive Smalley free plan to 48” span. It flew very well on 4 cells & always launched from a drop off dolly. Now needs some repairs. I’ve been a very good boy this year so I’m thinking of ordering the 190 & perhaps the Tempest too for Christmas. The big question for me is will my 4s 4000 lipo’s fit into the battery bay? Please say yes.
  9. Hi all, thanks to everyone who responded. All the opinions were helpful & I have learned something from them all. I have taken the advice from Matty. A 4s Lipo gave me 680 watts on a 13 x 6.5 prop , that is much more comfortable. Swapping to a smaller lipo also enables me mount the lipo vertically & further forward so hopefullyI may not need to add lead to correct the cg. Happiness all round. Thanks again, cheers John
  10. Thanks for your advice chaps. The Horus is a bit more demanding than my old Futaba. Frank, you found the correct model, there was a option to build a larger version 64” span. I think it would fly on 4s but then I would have to ballast the model to get the cg right. I”ll have to get myself “ psyched up” to give it a go. Cheers John
  11. Hi all, I have just acquired this new radio & am setting up the first model. I’m at the bottom of the learning curve. All the controls are good & the gyro is working so it should be good to fly. The problem is that I think I have far more power than is needed. The model is Boddo’s Chiltern DW1 , the motor is a Quantum 40 on 6s. The watt meter showed about 1.4 kw. The question is, ‘ Do I fly it as it is, or can the transmitter be set up to limit the power?’ Can an end point be set on the throttle as in the flight controls? Some say that you can’t have too much power, I’m not so sure. All advice/opinions welcome. Cheers Johnl
  12. "Sharkface" was my 2nd ever rc model. an absolute blast to fly. Back in the 70's (i'm aprevious life) i was teaching CDT & Technical Drawing at a school in Crewe. Eric joined the department for a year to cover for a colleague who was away on a course. He soon had the kids flying chuck gliders on the field, there was control line in the playground & round the pole in the hall. The kids loved it. He used to tow "Fred" behind his Ford Anglia with the wings folded & the tailplane on the roof rack. Fred sported a German WW1 lozenge camouflage scheme which he had painted with a 1/2 " paint brush. At the end of the year he moved on to another school in Crewe where he continued his activities by constructing a 'real aeroplane' , full size though not to fly. Kids would ask at lunchtime , " Please sir, can I make another wing rib. One of life's characters. Happy days.
  13. Just looked at the Dennis Bryant plan. The CG is 3 1/4"" behind the root leading edge.
  14. A friend gave me a Goldberg cub this summer. I am just finishing converting it to electric power. Ther is a helpful thread on this forum, search for " carl goldberg piper cub. Good luck.
  15. Paul, That's very impressive. Like it a lot.
  16. Hi everyone, thanks to all for your opinions, all are valuable & provide food for thought. It's a challenging project but the model came free & I have most of the stuff needed to finish it already in my spares so I think I will give it a go & see how far I get. It may turn out to be a one flight wonder but we will see. The wooden bits weigh 4lb:11oz can't do much about that, add on a couple of motors & lipos &it's up to 6lb 5oz. That seems to put the cg in about the right place but still have to add props, esc, paint etc. At the moment I am doing the motor mounts & making a drop off undercarriage. I will post photos when there is something to show. Raising the ailerons is a good idea, it would be nice if I could mix some up aileron with up elevator but I don't think that's available on my transmitter. I presume that the removable wing is a builders mod, it would have been nicer to mount the wing under the fuselage Please keep the comments coming, it's all good stuff. Cheers John
  17. Hi Paul, thanks for the reply. It' s not the message I was hoping for but your experience is very useful. I did think it might be a crash waiting to happen. Problems seem to be : high wing loading, pointy wingtips & no washout. It looks as if it's a lost cause. The plan was to electrify it with 35/48 motors 4s cells & make it into a belly lander with a drop off undercarriage. Anyone else had experience of this model? All comments are helpful. Cheers John
  18. Hi everyone, I wondered if anyone would recognise this. A flying friend is having a shed clear out & as a result I have been given this rather nice looking Mosquito. The plan was first published by Complete a Pack who also provided wood parts. I remember seeing them advertised in the mags back in the 60's/ 70's. The plan is still listed by Saric. The designer is W Fleming, the wingspan is 63" , the original model had 2 Merco 35s & weighed 9lb 4 oz. my calculator makes that a wing loading of 35oz/ sq'. The model has been very well built so it looks as if I have a winter project to finish it off. It will be an electric conversion. I wondered if anyone had memories of thes kits & can tell me how well they flew. Cheers John
  19. Hi. Thank you both for your ideas. I have just returned intending to swap the battery to another tx to try. Thought, 'I'll just try it one more time'. Guess what? Now it works fine. Thanks anyway. Funny things these electrons. Cheers John
  20. Hi. I connected the transmitter ( futaba 6EX 2.4) to the charger this morning. No green light on the charger. The charger is ok, it's working on another tx ( field force 6). The transmitter still works ok & shows 10.5v on the display. It is fitted with an eneloop battery. All suggestions welcome. John
  21. Michael. Good luck with the Tempest. Looks a cracking model. The take offs are easy but the landings are hot. cheers John
  22. Hi all. Some details of the Dora. Wing span 48", 4s 4000mAh lipo, motor is Turnigy 35-48. 840 kv, 12 x 6 prop, weight is 4lb 12oz,wing loading works out at 29 oz/sq ft. So it's not a lightweight. A drop off dolly is a much safer & more reliable way of getting into the air than a hand launch. The photo's are self explanatory, the fuselage is supported at the le & the dolly hooks over the te. The ' hooks' are flexible foam, don't make the fit too snug or it will hang up. This dolly was quickly cobbled together from bits that were to hand, it's not pretty but it works ok. The photo also shows an earlier dolly that gave reliable launches to a P40 for many years. Hope this helps . Cheers John.
  23. Hi all, here is the latest model to fly out of the lockdown workshop. Focke Wulf 190 D. Basically the Clive Smalley free plan from the 1979 rcm&e Scale Special . Enlarged to 48" wingspan, takes off from a drop off undercarriage, 4s lipo. In the air it feels as if it's on rails & has all the presence of a powerful fighter. Cheers John.
