Dave, I have been considering the same question. Having built 3 light weight, unpowered, flat field gliders I find myself limited to the few days when winds are not gusting above 10mph at ground level. The answer seems clear, a bigger glider strong enough to handle heavier wing loadings when ballast is added. I also want to move to electric launch. There are many expensive moulded carbon models that address the requirement. What has surprised me is the absence of plans/kits for the home builder. Any number of floaters for 'those warm evenings', nothing for my typical day of variable breeze with a surprise when you climb above the tree line! If adding a motor to a 3m RES sailplane, I fear that motor plus optional extra ballast may leave an airframe that is not strong enough. The other complication is airfoil. An electric launch RE glider sounds great but for penetration into the wind a relatively thin, low camber, airfoil may be needed, but then variable camber for extra lift becomes desirable and the wing build just got complicated. My number of own design builds to date is zero so any feedback from your efforts would be of interest. The airframe I have has a glass fuselage my dad gave it to me he had cut the nose off for conversion but thats as far as he got. I posted in the BARCS forum and the guy that built the glider in 1992/3 replied which was good the airframe is approximately 2.2lb and has ballast tubes in the wings so as long as the motor i have ordered gets it in the air fingers crossed I'll have a cheap entry to windy gliding. If all goes well I'll be looking to build something more like the Inside but heavier.   Dave Edited By David Still 1 on 13/08/2020 17:40:16 Edited By David Still 1 on 13/08/2020 17:43:08
  3. I may have got a solution i have an old 3m RES airframe I was given so i think I'll attempt an electric conversion I'll see how that goes first. Dave

Dave have a look at the Hyperflight website. There are some possibilities there that might suit your requirements e.g. the Picares Longears. Dick Thanks I've had a look at that and the introduction unfortunately they are both light breeze models below 10mph again. I have been given the suggestion of a plan Pete Kessell' Apollo so I'll have a look at that. Dave Edited By David Still 1 on 10/08/2020 18:52:53
  5. Posted by Bob Cotsford on 10/08/2020 12:51:46: I've got a RocHobby V-Tail waiting for a maiden. It goes together well and the reports on RCGroups are quite favourable. The Multiplex models fly well eg Heron, but are pricey for a chunk of foam. Thanks but I'm not a fan of foam i prefer to build and fly. Dave
  6. I'm looking for a plan or kit for an electric glider I need it to be able to handle a breeze my 2m RES glider struggles above 10mph which is a regular accurance on our field. So 2-3m span ailerons would be nice and able to fly in a breeze. Any ideas? Dave
  7. Good job I'm still waiting to get back out with mine, any time off work seems to coincide with naff weather!. Dave
  8. Posted by Steven Shaw on 07/06/2020 17:15:29: I roughly based mine on the Dornier Wal. Yes that's what I used as reference among other types I need to find some figures and make some dummy guns. Dave
  9. Posted by Paul Marsh on 07/06/2020 14:44:25: I found the plan quickly, need to buy some wood, when the shop opens. Have a spare OS10FP engine and servos, rx, battery so just need hardware. Excellent!
  10. Well I finally got to the flying field but it was a tad windy so all I really managed was a bumpy circuit hopefully some calmer days lay ahead Dave
  11. Posted by Cliff 1959 on 23/12/2019 22:50:18: That's a cracking colour scheme Dave, it really shows off Stan's design skills a treat. Make sure to more more bands on the wing though Thanks yes it is an enforced scheme as my dad gave me the solartex it seemed silly not to use it. I only put a couple of bands on for the pic I need to get some more, hopefully I'll bump into you up on the moor if she survives long enough . Dave
  12. I've just finished covering my first slope glider I just need to install the servos and linkages and shes ready to heave off the nearest hill. Shes a PMP Mk2 Stage2a covered in solartex it will be a slope trainer for me so fingers crossed. Dave
  13. Still sat patiently waiting enjoying seeing all the builds comming on and seeing any little niggles before I get my bits ordered hopefully next month. Dave
  14. Getting the wing seats and formers glued together with the fuselage sides next will some balsa longerons top and bottom. Dave
  15. Right oh! The next project on the board is this, I am looking to try some slope flying and a quick chat with Stan at PMP and I have a kit for a Stage 2a Mk2. All looks good in the box I've only built one full kit before which was my RES glider that is mainly carbon/balsa the Stage 2 is a more traditional build so I'll have a read of the instructions and peruse the plan and hopefully make a start this weekend.
  16. Posted by kc on 16/11/2019 17:33:14: A Google search reveals a few adverts on e-bay etc and a reference to it being a smaller version of the FlyBoy. There is a Fly Boy plan on Outerzone. I have often wondered why planes are named with Boy at the end - HiBoy, Lowboy etc - must be some connection I suppose. Yes I saw on the box it is a small version of the Flyboy The tail is all ¼" sheet and supplied pretty hard that will be replaced with built up items. Also alot of weight in the wings with bell cranks pulleys etc. which will be replaced with a couple of servos and a few other nips and tucks will shed some excess, from what I've seen it's probably a mid 70s model. Dave
  17. I have been given this kit it looks complete does anyone know it have any info I'll do an electric conversion when I get round to building it. Dave
