  1. Hi Hooch, starting out in model building/flying can be bewildering, what to buy, what to build, and it's very easy to spend money on unsuitable stuff. Best advice I could give you is to go visit a local club a few times, and see stuff in it's element and speak to people face to face.

To start the journey you need something stable/docile, there are ARTF trainers out there and plans to build one as well.

    Arising Star is one. https://www.horizonhobby.com/on/demandware.static/Sites-horizon-us-Site/Sites-horizon-master/default/Manuals/SEA1000_manual.pdf

Plans you can find here. https://www.sarikhobbies.com/product-category/model-aircraft-builder/model-aircraft-plans/rc-model-aircraft-plans/

There's a very real chance of introducing a strong selection bias in these repeated noting that -surprise, surprise - this online community of modellers contain a disproportionate number of people who have made credit or debit card payments to one of the largest modelling related retailers and the national body. You can be fairly certain that those who have been scammed also include multiple people who have used their card in B &Q, or Tesco or a BP filling station, but, due to the forum these are being noted in, that is not mentioned.

Well said, in other news most people hurt by modelflying propellors fly aeromodels.

You could cause damage to the trade that supports us and the BMFA et al, think what you post.

There's certainly a lot of hot stuff not very far under our feet!

Funnily enough, I was just hypothesising with someone earlier that the heat wasted by an IC engine seems to be the main reason why I've noticed the dramatic effect of headwinds/tailwinds on my electric car.  I do a fairly regular 120 mile out and return trip to somewhere northeast of me and on several occasions have had a 35 mph or so tailwind on the way out - and headwind on the way back.  The consumption is dramatically different on each leg - to a far greater degree than I've ever noticed with an IC car - but it balances out over the trip.

Tail or headwind would effects I.C Martin, you're just more conscious of it now.

  4. Very interesting topic. One which gets some people holding strong stances in favour or against. Over population ? Yes it's a fact, so is what that population does whilst it's on the planet, cherry picking ?

Steam and coal brought great change, anyone in any doubt it brought problems as well ? Pollution was horrendous where I grew up, rivers open sewers air quality, you could see it and taste it over any pit village or large industrial citys/towns, anyone doubt that changes that came about improved things ?

Tall buildings any different to wind farms ?

Can't see wind/solar/water being described as clean or free myself, cleaner and better for the planet I do see, emissions reduced by not burning I see.

Tyre residue ? My cars I.C It's tyres wear.

It does leave me a little disappointed that there are a number that are so converted to EVs that reports from the media are dismissed. I am thinking generally along the lines, the the second hand values fall faster than a similarly priced IC vehicle, that the range remains an issue for many, also that for manufacturers the percentage of sales for EVs, is falling relative to the rest of their range. There are more reported.

I suspect that the high initial costs, are an issue, especially for private purchases, whereas businesses can various tax advantages (at present), although the withdrawal of some, has changed their strategies.

If true the premium insurance costs are not an inducement.

However Ford have announced that their EV range is going to be centred on the lower cost small size EV market. Not the premium end.

I noted in the newspaper this weekend, that a number of small (tiny) vehicles are coming to the UK market. The Citroen Ami at £8000, 50 mile range, Fiat Topilino @ £9000 with a 50 mile range, Dogood Zero @ £ 6000 with 50 mile Range, the one I liked the look of Mobilize Duo with a 87 mile range, then there is the particularly ugly Biro Summer £11000 with a 35-60 mile range.

Many media reports suggest that Tim's practice of pre heating the vehicle, battery, seats etc. whilst on charge prior to departure is a must/ or generally sensible, in cold weather. Others indicate that the low quoted range in winter is often due to software having monitored previous usage and the option can exist where the electronics starts shutting functionality off, if the destination is known, and range seems to be an issue.

I am astounded by some claims that IC vehicles (cars) are subsidized, they appear to be anything but. Some see them as cash cows.

In my case range is an issue, once a month doing a 120-140 mile journey, unfortunately (for me) my present car will almost certainly out last me. I have nothing against EVs other than price, and the ability to carry my models, that few seem to have (in my price range).

I do see the elephants in the room, and am amazed at the Emperors new clothes, that some cannot see.

Advertisers do and always have painted a pretty picture, they do and did on I.C or any other product. The Emperors clothes comment exists for some minds, but not in the EV owners minds, they do point the disadvantages out, dyed in the wool I.C advocates focus on these as attack points, they're your Emperors clothes.

Subsidy ? Diesel (I.C) had it in spades via Zero or low road tax, I'm astounded you missed that.

Maybe the arguements bigger than the depreciation on value, you have to start somewhere, unless you believe it's all a conspiracy ?

Elephant in the room ? The human race.

  6. England game drove me crazy, ref fussed over the scrum so much he killed much of the game.

Yellow for Cheshum, his body and arms were good in the tackle, TMO said so, player came down to him, Yellow card ? Well there's head contact ? Later in the game Cheshums off for an HIA, think an elbow caught his head, no intent, no bad tackle, no card ?

  7. Didn't see many complaints, from the diesel users getting a special deal on their dubious cleaner vehicles, one mans incentive is anothers "Oooh I'm offended".

Change is coming, and yes there'll be issues and given dates not met, so what's new ?
