  1. Simon, I am even less enthusiastic than you, when relying on a grub screw as a bite/friction method of securing, particularly something such as a motor. A couple of 12mm bolts is the thing, or is that overengineering?🙄
  2. I have E mailed them, will see what the response is.
  3. Yep, Dickw, just lacking the info I seek.
  4. I have an electric motor a Tornado A3615, unfortunately some of the whole important data I would like, I do not have. What I am seeking is the max amps/watts, ideally related to 3s Lipo, will it run on 4s. Useful information relating to propeller information/selection? I am pretty certain that this was a Overlander, stocked item in the distant oast.
  5. I tend to agree, that for most, the physics are not even of passing interest. For those with a engineering background, it helps in understanding of what is happening and probably more importantly as to why. Again is mostly of interest when or if trying to optimise something. Not all aspects of physics or material science translates to the reality of the real world as expected. Many will arrive at similar conclusions from/via intuition. Most of us just copy others with what works. For most of us modellers it does not matter, if just plodding about the sky. For those Pylon racing, optimisation matters. Yet it is real world measurements that matter, not the predictions.
  6. Phillip You are taught in both "A" level applied maths and General Engineering studies (at all levels) that a rotating body is subjected to acceleration, in essence an inertial force. The heavier the body the greater acceleration is required to keep it all going. I just thought that we all experience the force when going around a corner, particularly noted when in F1 talk of "G" force.
  7. Sanding inside is a similar issue however done. In the case of the lidl sander their is a connection for a vacuum cleaner, if concerned and want to sand indoors.
  8. As Simon has written, IC props are heavier. The consequence is that more power is used in turning the prop, than a lighter prop. Which does mean there is a reduction in revs for the same watts drawn. As W=2piTN re-arranged N=W/2piT, a fancy way of saying less thrust. Also The higher camber on most if not all ic props seems to also adversely affect the thrust, possibly a drag thing. Does it matter, from experience and much to my surprise it does. IC props do not provide the same performance to an extent that is noticeable. Like many returned modellers, I have quite a collection of IC props. I do have concerns about them. My own seem to have dried out (could be a storage issue), plus polymers are known to deteriorate with age, again is it so with our propellers. We know that UV damages polymers and fabrics, is it an issue with our props, they are generally not outside. The other thing with age is that the plasticisers often leach out. I have just had an issue with some plastic hinges, which were buried in an old model, the old spares were brittle, again much to my surprise and annoyance (Kavan, about 30 years old). At the end of the day, I use electric props as they seem to work better than the equivalent new ic props. Plus all the ifs and buts are avoided.
  9. I have one, for some time, it was flagged some years back on this Forum. One of the most useful bits of kit I have ever purchased, just been using it today. The speed, finish and accuracy it provides, makes many jobs (if playing at model aircraft is a job) easy.

    Electric Cars.

Unless society returns to whale hunting I expect that the oil industry will be about for some time. Particularly that much of society makes use of polymers for a whole range of products, ranging from clevis's for model aircraft, electrical insulation materials, and so on. I have thought that many are just opposed to so called Big Oil, Big Pharma, without understanding the potential consequences of them not existing now or in the past. Yes I was wrong in ascribing the second law (of thermo) to Newton, who ever defined Entropy it was not Newton (confused with his 2nd law, I guess). From the concept of Entropy you come to realise that some claims made are more to do with wishful thinking than reality as to what is possible and how long things will actually last. I vaguely remember I was taught that the Earth has a Carbon oxygen chemistry. That reducing environments etc. were more specialised. But all this was at least 60 years back, as was the Lohner Porsche, even older.

    Electric Cars.

It appears that "What Car" magazine have tested electric cars under real world conditions. The findings are that Evs range have a "one third less range" than advertised. The tests were undertaken on a 60 mile loop, on a test track. They were done in the summer and winter over a number of years. The vehicles were left outside, overnight. On average their findings is that the range is 29.9% less than the official "Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure" figure. Although not confined to EVs, it does not surprise that the official and advertised figures differ, although not necessarily by such a substantial value. Apparently "honk Honk" (who ever they are), gas reported that a survey of 66 independent dealerships, that second hand EVs are becoming harder to sell. AS with all things the situations will change with time, although I can comprehend why many have reservations with respect to EVs. Particularly if it would be the only vehicle available within a family. Even though retired, normally undertaking short journeys locally, in the last few weeks I have undertaken 3 journeys (return) of between 130 and 200 miles. My nearest model shop would be 140 miles (hence I no longer go).
  12. I think I have the issues resolved now. I have inherited a largish numbers of Futaba Receivers. Why I am using 35 is another story, a bit boring. As I do have 2.4 Rx available. I did not initially (for 5 minutes) that they are all Dual Conversion. I then recognised that I had no DC crystals. Although the Rx all had Rx crystals, except one that pots to selected channel. One that appears to have non (that it matters). I decided to buy a pair, which began the subsequent saga. Nothing seemed to work. Which I thought in itself was unlikely. I slowly realised that I needed to change the Tx to PPM. Still nothing worked. It was then I discovered the Rx that you could select a Rx Channel. Now I knew that the (new) Rx crystal was the problem. I was going to complain to the original Vendor about the faulty crystal. Looking to purchase from another vendor, I did a search, noticing that on EBay I could buy 10 on the same frequency. That is what i have done, I await the delivery of the package. It is Hmmm a lot of years since I used 35, two 2.4 transmitters later, and it seems a poor memory of the 35 past, 27 is a foggy bit of history. Thanks for all your efforts, I hope to finally finish this trilogy with a final message all is now in order.
  13. Seems I have been lucky, for the first time. Has it all been used up for the rest of the series/season? I am hoping not to achieve a record for being first to last in a season. It does seem that the Red bull issues are more about politics at high level, than as at first presented. Hard to identify the main players, as the bit players and the deeper motives were not on display, the main participants have been at least initially cloaked.
  14. Can I simply replace my std. crystals in a 35 set, with a pair of Dual Conversion (matched) crystals in my Tx and Rx?
  15. Leccyflyer These are extracts from the paper Use caution when plugging in older style Airtronics connectors into receiver as polarity protection is unavailable . It does not work, reverse the connector. It then goes on to say Hitec RCD 555Micro receiver model numbers Model # 2872,Compatability Futaba f, Shift Negative. Model # 28572 , Compatibility Hitec, Shift Negative. Else where it is written, *must be used with genuine Hitec RCD dual conversion crystal only. As my DC crystals are Futaba, is there a problem?
  16. I am looking to use an old 35, Hitec 555 Rx. The box contains a note which I have not as yet understood. As I use Futaba servos and a power source wired to suit Futaba Rx requirements, I am concerned, is there an issue?
  17. We are talking about two old 2m Sagitta's. Both originally gliders. One was modified to electric foe some past electric power contest. This one was set up with some down elevator trim on throttle up. It worked well for a 30sec vertical climb. That was years back, since then I now use a different transmitter, plus I stopped flying gliders for at least 10 years. Now I do not have a clue how the original set up was done. The second model is also some 10-20 years old (not as old as the first), In essence I just controlled the climb out using the elevator. It was lively, but did not bother me. However at the club I now fly at, there are gasps of horror from other members when climbing vertically, heard one suggesting that they feared the model was going to crash. It seems the difference between a power club and and a flat field competition glider club, where wing bending bungee, tow or winch launches, start with vertical climbs often with a ping or even aggressive manoeuvres to maintain line tension (bungee, tow line). In short I decided to start scale glider type climb outs (to avoid upsetting others), then the short comings of the power set up have become apparent. I think you have guessed I have only recently taken them out of retirement (recommissioned, in modern jargon). For club flying the models are OK, the wings are overspared for todays flying styles. Plus we are in the days of Carbon/GF wings and bodies, excellent wing sections. Electric motors allow me stay up consistently far longer than I ever could achieve in my youth. Not quite the challenge of yore. It seems that they and me are all dinosaurs.
  18. The problem for us with free practice is that we do not know what the teams are really doing, is it about qualification, perhaps race set up. It could be even less the specific race, from understanding tyre, brake or maybe fuel consumption, all under various issues from a variety of fuel loads, air temperature effects. All will be trying the best to hide what they are doing and or why. Particularly this year where pre season testing appears to have been truncated. My results show little I know, and how useful the professional option would be to me. Then that is also true for others, know doubt we could all do alternative drivers and cars, that we suspect will gather more points.😢
  19. Simon, I did think if fitting a gyro that was activated on opening the throttle, switching off when closing the throttle. Although not clear in my mind, if it was possible. I had another thought that perhaps mixing in down elevator when opening the throttle, which I had mixed in some 30 years back (if my memory serves me well, with respect to time), I just cannot remember how I did it.
  20. It occurs when opening the throttle. When on the glide, there is no obvious porpoising on the glide or when diving (going faster). In short not obviously speed related.
  21. Using a Futaba Tx, with assignable switches and mixers, I want to set at least one TX Switch to the throttle position. The objective being to set a small amount of down elevator (the same as having feed in down trim) to opening the throttle. How would you do it?
  22. Bill Those pictures are spot on IMO. The X3 has been of interest for a long time. I have seen the Doulas 558 (Crimson Test Tube) at Pensacola, where it is fastened to a wall in the foyer. One of your collective images. It is tiny. A long with the (Gut less) Cutlass (also in Pensacola), engines and the lack of power was a major issue, many engine programmes failed or were cancelled.
  23. What do others think about the newspapers revelations about Jos Verstappen. Quite a bit a colourful history now being printed in the newspapers, no more coyness, just this happened, to whom, when, where and so on. Is it in Toto's ( and Mercedes) best interest apparently being seen to be having chats with Jos. My wife found some information on the internet with respect to the alleged complainant, that is a picture, suggested as a good acquaintance of Jos. That is other than a name, their role. I am left baffled why a picture is supposedly fine, yet no other details. Then there is the suggestion, that much is a power struggle to switch control of the team from the UK to Austria, and loosening the grip of the principle shareholder of RB racing (apparently a guy from the Far East). Is it about revenue and advertising, or perhaps control freakery or other? Then what is it the Horner is alleged to have done, other than the very vague allegation. If Horner goes, would others to, would another team want him, would RB go into decline. Would Verstappen remain, if he were to stop winning races?
  24. Grumpy, Hmmm, who was or is it then? Surely not some one to nobble RB?
