  1. Meanwhile I am saving 2k£ per annum in fuel and rfl costs..... Blimmey I would keep quiet about that as it's likely to upset the great unwashed poorer people who are helping to keep you better off...possibly.
  2. Domestic smart meters... Probably modern cars will "talk" to government or the electricity supplier... I will probably never have any money to buy an electric car. If I did win on the lottery I would never spend mega bucks on a car, or anything else for that matter, apart from a multi purpose van perhaps. I will keep the pug ( 2001 year hdi estate 126k miles 60mpg ) going for as long as possible. The fiesta, 1.1 petrol tax and mot exempt will do about 50mpg but needs some cash injection to make it mot able. Retirement project when the pension comes thru. Sadly only 11 large banana boxes will fit in it ! I do agree that an ev would suit the lads needs well. Is it true that, a private solar panel roof "must" sell the electricity produced to the "grid" these days ?
  3. Better ask Putin that mate ! Not having our roof over our heads may happen, when the savings run out, which won't take long, but don't worry, if that happens, my future is assured.
  4. Need must eb, it's gunna be a long and very hard winter. Little heating and little food, but at least there is no ordinance falling on us, yet.
  5. Test, to get to this thread. Anyone else having problems with dwp and pension ? BR1 form filled in many weeks ago and still no letter or email, living on fresh air at the moment. Hopefully something in Monday's post else it's the merry-go-round of trying to get to speak to the "right person" on the phone. At least the gas meter has now gone so no more demands from that particular leach.
  6. At least Tesla's have working indicators fitted !
  7. No shortage of money then.....enjoy.
  8. But used in take off, stall turn and spiralling down, even knife edge and side slip landing...? I used rudder for hi boy 3 channel inverted eights.... Just fly, fly, fly, and increase gradually what you can do with the plane. Hieght is your friend... Practise makes perfect.
  9. Congrats on your A test. The real learning starts now, gently expanding the flight envelope and capabilities of your model, and your self. Steady as you go. Think about a B test in a year's time. 3 or 4 channels at the moment ?
  10. Thanks Tim. The lad has about a total 35 mile commute to work and back, sometimes more if he has to go to a different "station" whilst at work, and to pick her up when she gets pevved waiting an hour for her bus. They have private off street parking and could exploit 2 south facing roofs for solar, so an ev would work for them, for the vast majority of needs. An ev could work for us also, similar "property", but, a holiday trip ( remember them ! ) to the SE, some 260 miles away, would need real planning. In the diesel pug, we just go (60 + mpg on a long trip ) and top up the tank if needed. Only thing needed ( apart from 100,000 or more charge points, off peak, some charge point luck, and a "Genny" ) is money. Guilty, 100,000 is FUD, more like a million needed 24/7/365....do charge points need a day off ? Perhaps "ev battery exchange points" for refueling ? An "ev 1 gallon range" spare battery pack, like a gallon container in the back of the car ( rentable ? ) as a safeguard for those long journeys...as long as a crane is not needed to lift it in the car and a suitable very close "plug in point" is fitted. The luggage can go on the roof. You can just imaging the charge point arguments...."I was here first ! ". "Jog on, I was here first !!! " Etc.... Much more work needs to be done such as Standardisation...
  11. Hi Tim, so it's true then, now or very soon, an "Act of Parliament", or as has been suggested, merely "FUD" ? Can I ask how many miles range that charging period, 4 1/2 hours, gives you please ? I assume it's a rapid charger ? Thanks.

  13. Old dogs etc....the Titanic was not unsinkable, it sank ! I am not anti EV or anti electric power for models etc.., I have been using nicad and similar for years with no problems, but the " chemistry" popularly used these days needs proper tlc, else it has the potential to destroy stuff in quiet a spectacular way, even areas of sssi status. If this is FUD, why are charging bags and safes used for these batteries ? Back to ev cars, see my post of a few days ago, perfect for the lads commute to work, just need the money to adopt it. They are off to a gig in Manchester tomorrow, with an overnight stop. Hopefully the *digs" will have an ev charge point, or car park below the rooms window to dangle a charge lead from ? They have a petrol car at the moment.....
  14. eFIXX... UK government to shut down peak hours ev charging... Menergy, Yorkshire... Gone thru parliament ? An "Act of Parliament" now, so law ? Dr. Chris Horn. Sorry if that's wrong spelling Chris. Porn MP has resigned, more FUD probably. I have a criticism of you tube, display the date the article was posted please.
  15. Exactly where did I say death traps ? Water is not a conducter, is it not ? The stuff that falls from the sky is water plus other stuff ? Water ingress can cause havoc, condensation within the cabin and non waterproof electrical connections, add some frost, misteriouse faults appear. Not all contacts are gold. I have come across several "water proof" electrical connectors, pull out and reconnectable types, that "fill up with water " ! I have even known petrol tank caps that are by design, water traps, that allow water into the tank. The looming charging rules challenge was on you tube. A really good April the first just like nwp hq on fire ! The roof was actually on fire ! The you tube article, I will try to find it for you....I watched it this morning... Mot abd tax exempt, yeah I was told that was FUD too. As to not using model electric propulsion ( for planes, or real size ev cars for that matter) , I know the Titanic sank. I didn't have to be "on it" at the time to know that. I am told a lipo damaged in a crash, punctured outer, could/is a danger ? Is that correct please ?
  16. New rules about EV charging coming in quite soon, with the aid of smart meters...
  17. Anyone know if this show in Farnborough will be on TV ? Too far for us to drive to, pity as we have friends relatively close ( Dunsfold )...diesel is very expensive at 1.73/litre locally. The pug will get there and back will a little to spare on a tankfull. Is the Jindivic target drone still by the fence I wonder. Want to make a slope soarer model of that.
  18. Will have to research charging leads and sockets/comparability etc., But there may be a market for "adapters"...? Charging points, leads, sockets and plugs, mix in a bit of rain....exciting times me thinks. Hope they gave though of that senario...
  19. This is an interesting thread... We live in a very rural area which, thank God, has a good bus service to the nearest large town. Getting a bus pass is the best birthday present you will ever have in my opinion, even if the bus is diesel powered. For us, an electric car could work mostly, but for the odd long distance journey, an ev would be a real worry. We could not afford 2 cars, so we are keeping the road tax expensive but 60mpg pug 306 diesel estate. Things are different for the lad and his commute of 16 miles each way. A leaf would be very adequate for his commute circumstances. Off road parking about 20 metres from his front door, at the end of the Garden. 2 largish south facing roofs for possible solar panel exploitation, and enough of a hight difference for a possible small, very small hydro plant. All that's needed is money. He currently uses a fiat Punto 1.2 returning about 53 mpg. He is a sensible economy driven driver. If he wants speed, he will get a Yamaha R1. We are lucky I suppose. A change in society is needed as well as a sensible max road speed. We do not need 200, 300 or even 400 bhp or equivalent, 75 bhp is sufficient for cars, even motorcycles. Ev's do need greater range ( bigger batteries=more wieght at present ), or thousands upon thousands of more charging points and the means/capacity to power them. Solar farms on every Tesco store roof, every house roof etc., or a total rethink of home/life/work location. A mixture of everything really. As sure as eggs are eggs, the government will impose a tax on car electricity or ev ownership, they just haven't announced it yet, just like a "breathing tax" ! Stay safe out there.... Off to read the remaining 50% or so of this thread...? As to the poor people affording a vehicle, they have beer and bingo and 2 legs ( mostly ), what more do they want. We consider ourselves poor, the dwp does not make mistakes, they said. Fill out that br1 form and prey !
  20. I am gunna read this thread from the begining as it is of interest. I am sure some of you will have read the New Scientist mag, the issue in the 1990's about the American airport German car hire company using solar cracked hydrogen as the fuel for the company fleet of IC cars ? When the government figures out how to tax electricity for vehicle use, the situation will probably change. Maybe this is why the push for smart meters ? Remember, they said nuclear electricity would be toooo cheap to meter. Yeah, right.
  21. Some fuel residue, non castor based fuels, when baked on, is very difficult to remove. It's as if it has a clear "glaze"... For castor based fuels I find petrol will shift it. Get a large necked jar, like a gerkin jar, and place the engine in that for a day or two. Agitate the jar by shaking from time to time. You will see the " crap" collect at the bottom of the jar. It can be filtered and reused till "spent". Interestingly someone posted about petrol contaminated diesel..... Obviously don't use petrol indoors or in a sonic cleaner, it's highly flamable and a very real fire risk, SO BE WARNED !!!
  22. Yeah, they left my parcel outside in the pouring rain. They didn't knock on the door ( there was a large sign in the window saying use the door knocker !!! ) or text/phone/email either. The wife discovered the parcel the following morning by accident, putting stuff in the recycling boxes ! It was soaked thru. The contents seemed ok. Not impressed Hermies.
  23. Stuff from China, I am told the Chinese government pay the carriage/delivery/postal charges ?
  24. Surely actually making your own flying models, even from a kit or from a plan, even using modern "different" materials, is what we did years ago ? All you need is basic woodworking skills that used to be taught in schools, or from your dad. Make the models your self, even from foam etc., a win win. Win and enjoy the "making" proccess, win again when you fly it. It's aeromodeling at its best. However, if you have loads of money, just "buy" your enjoyment, and scrap it when you break it, or learn to repair it ! A ready made Rtf model may look good, but a "self made" model is better in my eyes, more " credibility" especially free flight....the true aeromodellers. Stay safe out there and enjoy.
  25. Thanks Ed, time to get the wife knitting and bitching, remember Edwina curry ! Political comments removed....please stay on topic folks...
