Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
One more thing Chris. During my reading up on V-tails I came across quite a bit of stuff saying that they put additional stress on the rear fuselage - particularly twisting moments. I don't know that there is much you can do about this - you don't want to go round adding a load weight to the back end - but perhaps just be aware of it in the early flights and watch out for any signs that the rear fuselage might be flexing BEB
Chris Bott - Moderator
OK yes thanks BEB. I guess that makes sense that rudder (one up one down) will have a rolling effect. Trust me to have lightened the back end with holes. I'd better put on the top and bottom sheeting that I was considering omitting.
Chris Bott - Moderator
Tonight has been a real mix of jobs. Being a little tired of balsa bashing I wanted to get some colour on. This morning it was going to be beige and cream. But a trip to the LMS had some translucent blue leaping into my hand and I though I had plenty of white to go with it. So here we are. I don't have enough white so another trip to the shop soon. With the bottom film on, aileron servo leads were extended and the servos installed. The flap servo is installed and connected. Now the leads are through, the top film can go on. Anyone have any ideas for stopping polyester profilm from getting such a static charge? It seems to attract balsa dust from nowhere. I need to clean out the inside before putting the top film on..
martin Rowley 1
You can come round and do mine! I expect yours will be done by the weekend.Great job Chris!
Tim Mackey
Very neat - the wing I mean, not the shop
Chris Bott - Moderator
Oh I know all about the workshop Tim. This is actually tons tidier than before! If I make any space, the family seem to use it to dump the junk that they dont want to throw away! That bench too was tidied completely and hoovered before I started tonight! Ah well, the jobs getting done
Tim Mackey
LOL. I was only teasing Chris - the most productive people are those with untidy benches and workshops. A good friend of mine ( not a modeller ) is the untidiest slob I know - his music studio, and general office area ( he is an IT specialist ) is an absolute tip - I just shudder when I visit. However, his productivity, work rate and creativity is amazing...I sometimes wish I could be like that . But I suffer with the opposite - OCD, and spend more time cleaning the shop than actually building Sorry off topic - just told myself off - honest
Chris Bott - Moderator
Fine by me Tim. Isn't it odd, the untidyness really really annoys me. Through this project I am learning just how much quicker I can go now I can find things straight away. I'm hoping it will be a springboard to a much more organised workshop.See my first pic? I just built that bench in time for the webbit.
Chris Bott - Moderator
Bit of a milestone tonight. The wing is completely finished. Servos in, surfaces hinged and glued, all connected and tested on a model memory on the DX8. I may add a splash of colour later, I think it's asking for it. But I'll wait until the fus and tail are at this same stage. Feel like a rest now.
Danny Fenton
looks great Chris, not long to go now and its test flight time........
Chris Bott - Moderator
er... yes maybe. Now I have to tackle the bits that made me switch back to the wing. Namely what to do around the nose and getting a V tail seated correctly and straight.
Andy Muckley
Hi Chris looking great but i think i'll stick to the plan as it's my first build, but it just shows how different you can make it. Brilliant pal, i'll be happy with a webbit that fly's. I have a question about the under carrage, do you need it or would it be ok to hand launch as it is a small model ? Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Hi Andy, you'd have no problem hand launching the WebBit. The only slight downside is that belly landings do tend to take a bit of a toll on the covering - but she'll be fine, just make sure any seams in the lower covering face backward and you might have to freshen up the under fuse covering every now and then. Chris - nice work - looking good BEBEdited By Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 05/04/2011 22:38:
Chris Bott - Moderator
I agree with BEB Andy, hand launching will be no problem and lighter. Do try to keep the weight down while building. I'm undecided about an U/C myself yet. Time to stop tonight. I've only added some snake supports and the rear decking. Here's a few shots including a couple showing how different a "VeeBit" looks. Chris Bott - Moderator
It seems that with this model I want to do things differently. No idea why, I don't usually, must be at a funny age? The undercarriage decision has been made and it has one, but not as designed. (Surprise ) I'm not sure this would do for a heavier Webbit so any copies are at your own risk. Thanks to Martin for suggesting the method, it's borrowed from an ARTF we both have. Edited By Chris Bott on 06/04/2011 18:06:
Big Bandit
Chris, Love it all, and the UC is right on the money, easy to fabricate, why didn't I think of it .Cheers,Chris.
Chris Bott - Moderator
Just hope its not too bouncy Chris, that or it may have to be re-bent all the time. At least I still have the option to add the rear braces.
Chris Bott - Moderator
I've been putting off the Vtail seat. But it has to be done so without much inspiration here's what I managed.
Andy Muckley
Hi all. After seeing your undercarage Chris i may just do somthing on the same lines as you. Thanks BEB for the input i see what you mean about the belly landings so undercarage it is i think
Chris Bott - Moderator
Andy if you do, it doesn't show on the pictures, but I drilled my holes on a slope so that the legs lean forward like the plan.
Tim Mackey
I find my legs and indeed my whole body also lean when I am on the slope - and I often drill holes on it also - or more precisely in it

Chris Bott - Moderator
Cracking on through the jobs I'd put off now. Couldn't decide on tail wheel/ply skid/wire.. Eventually went for a wheel from the spares box which goes against my "everything light" hopes. But it seems to have worked out OK. Then went round in circles about fairing the motor in, but I want to be able to get at it. In the end, faired it in, then cut it off!! I'll come up with a cowl fixing method. Magnets or just screws from the side probably.
martin Rowley 1
I'm amazed at your productivity.I keep meaning to get on with mine, but end up watching your build instead. Nice cowl assembly! Martin PS: Thanks for the mention on the u/c idea. You can blame me if it's too bouncy!
