A couple of things came to my mind during and shortly after the race;

  • Does it make sense that in a red-flag situation cars can be worked on (most significantly tyres changed) effectively "for free" before the race restarts?  Maybe not such an issue if the red flag is deployed immediately after an incident,  but more so after a period under the safety car.  Admittedly, back in the distant past the situation was even worse where, after destroying the race car in an incident, drivers were sometimes able to return to the race after the red flag in the spare car.
  • Should DRS be disabled - for the 2 drivers concerned - for a lap following a place having to be handed back?  The collision clearly happened because neither Max nor Lewis wanted to cross the DRS detection point ahead of the other.

I do hope we have a 'clean' race next weekend,  but I keep seeing in the back of my mind the first corner collision involving Senna and Prost in 1990. Something similar on Sunday would hand the title to Max...

If the the title is decided by an incident that is caused by Max over driving again and taking Lewis out a points deduction should be enforced, a finish to an excellent season should not be brought down to stock car level. I enjoyed watching NASCAR racing a number of years ago and there the slogan is rubbing is racing, final corner nudges are expected for the win. That is very entertaining and part of the culture but F1 is not NASCAR and rubbing is definitely not racing there...........

I'm not a fan of Hamilton. too much drama queen for me, but I'm not particularly a fan of Verstappen either. I do think though that it will be a great shame if Verstappen loses the title. He has lost many points due to bad luck(eg Hungary and Baku)  and Hamilton has had a lot of good luck (eg Imola, where a red flag let him off the hook caused by a driving error). It was a good season whilst the cars were pretty much equal but now Hamilton has got back what he has had for many years, the much better race car.  Since Silverstone the Merc has just got faster and faster. Verstappen has had to be forceful because he hasn't got the engine to overtake a Merc, whereas Hamilton can easily pass the Red Bull because of that beast of an engine the Merc has. Verstappen has had to attempt overtakes in the corners, Hamilton has always been used to overtaking on the straights.

I have Red Bull as my team, but would like to see Lewis win another championship, mainly to fly the flag but also in recognition of his racing spirit. Red Bull I think will be the team for next year. It would be a disappointing end to the season if the race was decided by the stewards or events due to collisions as has happened in the past.

Indeed... it's 13:00 GMT (UK time!) and so 14:00 Central European Time (France, Spain, Germany, etc.) for both qualifying and the race.  So I'll give the customary reminder, for the last time this year;

Don't forget your predictions!

P1 saw Verstappen posting fastest time,  but in P2 he could only post 4th fastest, with Hamilton fastest ahead of Ocon and Bottas.

Fingers crossed for a clean and entertaining race.  And one where the championship is decided on the track,  and not by the stewards!

Thanks John, been a long season and some good races to be viewed.

Think Mercs are a shoe in tomorrow and it'll be anticlimatic. C'mon the Hondas.

Unfortunately I agree, Merc cars just too strong. It will be Max against 2 Mercs again so not much chance at all to finish ahead of Hamilton.

A set of results are in, may not be the final version though, my lips are sealed.

Well yes...  What a sad way to end the championship race - decided by the tactics of the safety car!

I'm afraid as Max crossed the finishing line, aided and abbetted by the safety car, I turned the telly off and went out for a long bicycle ride!  60 kms later I'm now back, and it looks like protests are underway - surprise surprise.  I guess if Lewis had won then Red Bull would be protesting the first lap incident.  Ho hum!

Anyway...  no Channel 4 folks to wait for today,  so lets have a look at the scores - at least as they stand right now!

Well done to today's top 3!

But does this mean there are any changes in the overall table?

There is one change which I'll come to in a moment,  but no changes at the top.

Our season's winner is John Stones

Second place goes to Chris McG

Third place goes to Tony Clark.

A big "well done" to our season's top three!

The only place change today was John T grabbing 6th from Glenn.

So - 2022 kicks off in Bahrain on March 20,  don't forget ytour predictions!  ?

Bad end to a great season, both drivers racing out their skins all year, what can you say.

Radio comms between teams and stewards want banning, serve no purpose other than pressuring to get your own way, both guilty of it year long, it's out of order.

Feel the result will get overturned myself, sad ending.

P.S Credit to Max/Lewis for after race comments.

Still don't think it's over myself, however....

Thanks as always to JP for his efforts, man's a star.

Congratulations to Chris and Tony on podiums and Igor for being Igor (Rubbish). ?

And to everyone else who put teams in, thanks, wouldn't be fun without you.

Here was my team, no changes all year.

Max, Tsunoda, Norris.

Red Bull, Ferrari, Williams.

Thanks for your kind words everyone...

It's a pleasure running this for you guys,  it certainly adds an extra dimension to the racing!  And Simon, well done for your last place - Kev and I did our best (worst?) to try to stop you getting it.  But I always reckoned there's a very fine dividing line between genius and madness! ?

As for the result,  well one of the two was always going to be disappointed.  It's just a shame it was 'decided' in such an artificial manner.  But looking back over the season there were several times that luck went one way or the other.  If one driver had been so much better than the other then they wouldn't have been level on points at the start of the race.

I doubt we've heard the end of this, even though Mercedes' initial protest has been rejected.  Let's look forward to 2022!

Sadly, some years ago when the TV rights went to pay TV and I was only able to catch highlights of selected races, I lost interest in F1 - possibly coinciding with increasing politicising and ever more commercialism with sterile new circuits with no history.  For a few days, my interest was stimulated by the robust racing - maybe not wanting to see unsporting driving rewarded - but sadly, if the organisers can't get their act together (the "bargaining" in the previous race being bad enough) then I'm likely to return to my previous ambivalence.

On the plus side, Lewis (and his father) handled their disappointment commendably - something that I wasn't entirely expecting.
