It is definitely a bit of a head scratching moment though when you offer the tail up to the canoe and realise they are not the same size! Looking very nice Kev. As you can see I built the rear frame directly over the plan (free pull out one) and as you can see it looks good, the "longerons" going all the way to the rear of the wing seat. Took it off the bench today after work and offered it up to the "tub". Oh dear. Decided to check a few things. Placed the rear frame on the plan side view aligning the first cross member with its relevant location. All the other cross members also line up. As you can see it comes up short. Side view measurement from tail end to front of "longeron". Same measurement from tail end to top plan view. It is coming up just shy of a 1/4 to short!!! When I offer up the rear deck to the "tub" I get the impression that the first cross member is to wide or the fuselage rear is to small.!! So measure across the plan. Measure across the "tub". Just had a quick measure of F4 against the plan and all is correct. What I think I will do is remove the first cross member from the rear section and insert a smaller one. I laid the "tub" over the plan pinned the paddle in place, lined it all up along the plan and bingo. The paddle fits perfectly, well it will once sanded to shape, but as you can see the "tub" tapers in towards the rear which indicates to me that the top of F4 is not wide enough!!! Fear not the clamps are only just nipping the wood. No damage will occour, nor any bending of the leading edge. One down, the other on the board. Anyway, back to the build. As you can see I chop and change a bit when building. I like to be able to go back to a piece whilst another is drying. Top front sheet finished. And the undercarriage plates being epoxy`d in place. Again the clamps are on a piece of scrap balsa to prevent damage to the wing seat. WOETC (Rob) Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 I've built 3 DFs now (2x original size and 1 scaled up to 1.5 times) and glueing the upper longerons to the tub first is exactly what I did for each of them. Maybe its my "downunder" brain but it didnt occur to me to build them as separate units and then marry them up. Its the way to go as I didnt have any issues. Once the glue had dried, I glued ply doublers across the longeron to tub joint (on the inside) and then turned the assembly upside down so I could draw the longerons together over the plan in the normal way. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of strength that this has added to the rear. I thought I had more wood in stock than I actually had, so I feel another visit to SLEC coming up. I have fitted the tail skid, lots of epoxy and a ply strengthening strip on the lower 1/4 square. However the postie did deliver these this morning. Kevin Fairgrieve Posted March 10, 2014 Author Share Posted March 10, 2014 No I have not forgot about this. Progress has been slow but, but a lot achieved. Now that`s a strange way to put it. Work on the cockpit area had me scratching my head. Lots of curves and bends to consider. I got to work with the water spray bottle, and this is the result for the front half. Not really as neat as it looks! I made another $3 and placed it in front of the current one. Somewhere for the back half sheet to fix to. Again out with the spray and tape it in place till it dry`s. Once that was done, I gave it a light sanding to feather it all in and then cut out the cockpit. There is a tiny bit of wood missing right at the front, but that will disappear when the cockpit edging is in place. Once that was done it was time for a motivation shot. So that is basically the woodwork finished. I will take the whole lot outside tomorrow, and give it a good sand in preparation for staining and covering. But I have decided that I am going to leave it. And I was so careful not to get any glue where it was not needed. I missed a few bits in the cockpit area, but I may as yet paint that black.
