Did you use a template to cut each rib out or sand them all together in a pack?

First to kc`s question, because it will be quicker to answer than the others!!!

I cut each rib individually using a ply template.

I could have used the sandwich method, but find the challenge of getting accurate ribs very rewarding.

Vecchio and BEB.

Well!!!

As you can see I built the rear frame directly over the plan (free pull out one) and as you can see it looks good, the "longerons" going all the way to the rear of the wing seat.

0015 rear frame (2).jpg

Took it off the bench today after work and offered it up to the "tub".

017 rear discrepancy (1).jpg

Oh dear.crying

Decided to check a few things. Placed the rear frame on the plan side view aligning the first cross member with its relevant location. All the other cross members also line up.

017 rear discrepancy (2).jpg

As you can see it comes up short.

Side view measurement from tail end to front of "longeron".

017 rear discrepancy (3).jpg

Same measurement from tail end to top plan view.017 rear discrepancy (4).jpg

It is coming up just shy of a 1/4 to short!!!

When I offer up the rear deck to the "tub" I get the impression that the first cross member is to wide or the fuselage rear is to small.!!

So measure across the plan.

019 width issue (1).jpg

Measure across the "tub".

Just had a quick measure of F4 against the plan and all is correct.

What I think I will do is remove the first cross member from the rear section and insert a smaller one.

Looks like no two "Dawn Flyers" are going to be the same.

I think you are correct VA.

I think F4 is the wrong size on the plan.

I laid the "tub" over the plan pinned the paddle in place, lined it all up along the plan and bingo.

020 paddle fit.jpg

The paddle fits perfectly, well it will once sanded to shape, but as you can see the "tub" tapers in towards the rear which indicates to me that the top of F4 is not wide enough!!!

Wings, fuselage, I generally enjoy all aspects of a build. If I had e preference though, fuselage would win.

Anyway, back to the build. As you can see I chop and change a bit when building. I like to be able to go back to a piece whilst another is drying.

Top front sheet finished.

And the undercarriage plates being epoxy`d in place.

Again the clamps are on a piece of scrap balsa to prevent damage to the wing seat.

Hi Kevin

That makes me feel better, I thought I'd made a bigger error than I actually had.

PS. No the glue stick was not used to do it with.teeth 2

Oh no now you tell me...

So tis the plan not just gremlins in the CNC pack then.

I am now hooked on this builds as I am with BEB's, Kevin so keep it up please.

Re the lattice work what is to stop me from sticking the longerons on to the canoe sides first.

David,

That's what I did and it worked well for me.

I've built 3 DFs now (2x original size and 1 scaled up to 1.5 times) and glueing the upper longerons to the tub first is exactly what I did for each of them. Maybe its my "downunder" brain but it didnt occur to me to build them as separate units and then marry them up. Its the way to go as I didnt have any issues. Once the glue had dried, I glued ply doublers across the longeron to tub joint (on the inside) and then turned the assembly upside down so I could draw the longerons together over the plan in the normal way.

BTW, I've put a cheap HK sound unit in the big one and its pretty cool.

Cheers, Rob

Kev, where did you get your wheels from? I may as well order them then I can try the undercart while I wait for the cnc and wood pack to arrive.

I could try and get my pilot 1/12th scale to move his head and arm. Then Alex W. will see the pilot wave!

John M

John I got mine from Model Shop Leeds only one showing in stock as of now.

I took some shots of Dennis Richardson's Dawn Flyer at Ashbourne, he had used some really nice wheels. He told me where he got them, but I can't remember where he said. I think they were around the £30 mark smile o

If anybody is interested I can mail him?

No I have not forgot about this.

Progress has been slow but, but a lot achieved. Now that`s a strange way to put it.

Work on the cockpit area had me scratching my head. Lots of curves and bends to consider.

I got to work with the water spray bottle, and this is the result for the front half.

036 cockpit front (2).jpg

Not really as neat as it looks!

I made another $3 and placed it in front of the current one. Somewhere for the back half sheet to fix to.

Again out with the spray and tape it in place till it dry`s.

037 cockpit rear (3).jpg

Once that was done, I gave it a light sanding to feather it all in and then cut out the cockpit.

038 cockpit opening (2).jpg

There is a tiny bit of wood missing right at the front, but that will disappear when the cockpit edging is in place.

Once that was done it was time for a motivation shot.

039 woodwork complete (7).jpg

So that is basically the woodwork finished.

I will take the whole lot outside tomorrow, and give it a good sand in preparation for staining and covering.
