2019 Loch Insh Splash In

Recommended Posts

My wife and I were on holiday in Scotland (from Arizona in the United States) when I saw an online posting about a float plane event at Loch Insh. It wasn't far from where we were staying in Inverness so we took a drive out.

I'm a modeler so it was great to talk to the guys and see what they fly. To be honest, I was surprised to see anyone flying in those conditions. My respect goes to those Scottish pilots.

I'm not sure if any of the guys at that event will see this post, but if they do I wanted to thank them for the hospitality extended to us.

Hi Marc, yes you can be sure that someone in the club or even fellow clubs will read this thread. Modellers on the whole are a friendly bunch, but take it from me Scottish folk are extra friendly, and no doubt would have made you and your wife very welcome. It's all to do with the water they drink up there, they call it whiskey I think lol. Cheers. ps I am Welsh with Scottish relatives so I know. Great pics by the way.

Those are great pics of what looks like a fun event - wish I would have known about it in advance, but it slipped under the radar - I remember the conditions on that day were horrendous, with very high. blustery winds so well done indeed to those who braved the elements and flew off that choppy loch water. Thanks Marc

My wife isn't as enthusiastic about model aviation as I am. Not at home in Arizona and even less so when we're on holiday 5000 miles from home. So I could only stay for a short while in the morning. But I think conditions improved throughout the day.

Here's a link to a wee video of one pilot taking off into the chop. He was also performing very nice 4-point rolls with that plane.

I'm the original poster for this thread and I still have fond memories of my visit to Loch Insh and chatting with the local pilots in 2019.

My club in Arizona just had our first float fly and here are some pictures. We don't have as much water here as you guys do in Scotland, but we still had fun on a beautiful day. This was the first float fly I've attended since my trip to Scotland.
