Geoff Gardiner
OK, so here we go with another build log! I wanted something that would be suitable to take a 'B' test with and also something that would be a good first model to build using my Home-made laser / CNC cutter. My first thought was The Ohmen, but decided on the Oodalally as it is a bit larger. Also, I have some 4s batteries that need a good home. Having obtained a PDF version of the plan, the first job was to trace out all the parts that I would be laser cutting. For this I used a program called InkScape. Each part was created on a separate layer, this makes it easier when you create the cutting files later. Next, I created a new document in InkScape and set the page size to a sheet of balsa. Then I copy all the parts that will be the same thickness and lay them out on the page. I then produce a cutting path and using the J Tech Photonics laser tool (a 3rd party extension that I installed into InkScape), I produce the g-code file. More later... Geoff Gardiner
The g-code file is the loaded into a program calles CNCjs which controls the laser cutter. And the job is set going. And in next to no time we have this... More later...

christophe dauvergne
Hi do you have a file of manufacture of your laser machine that interests me strongly the section mechanical and electronic regards christophe
Geoff Gardiner
Hi Christophe. I built the machine myself, printing parts for it with my 3d printer. See here for details. It also will hold a dremel for milling jobs - ideal for cutting thicker ply. The laser unit is a 5W diode laser from BangGood. Hope that helps. Chris North 3
Looking good Geoff. I love the idea of a laser but just not sure I would get much value out of it given the amount if building I'm doing. Following your build
Geoff Gardiner
Thanks Chris. I wondered that myself, which is why I built my own laser. Even if I don't use it much, I have had a lot of fun building it and getting it to work.
kc
For those who don't want to spend time and money making and sorting their own laser cutter you can of course buy laser cut parts from Sarik! Peter Miller
Or you can sit there with a power fret saw and a scalpel and cut your own out.

Steven S
I'm just finishing up scratch building a set of ribs for my Lil' Cub, just some holes to cut. It took most of the afternoon to cut 26 ribs so far, but I enjoy the time spent at little jobs like this.

Geoff Gardiner
As I am building the Oodalally for electric power, I needed to alter F1 so that the battery can pass through it to help with obtaining the correct CofG without (hopefully) having to add extra weight up front. I swapped out the laser for my dremel and cut out these parts: Here is the machine in action: I didn't get the measurements spot on, so it needed a bit of fettling to put together: More Later...
