Geoff Gardiner
Fuselage is coming along: Battery tray. Cockpit. Battery hatch. Luckily the bit that remained when I cut out the motor mount sides, was just right for making a servo tray. More later...
Peter Miller
That was a bit of luck!!
Geoff Gardiner
Battery hatch is Tack glued to the fuselage (with a couple of small drops of cyano) to allow planing and sanding to shape. spacers and tail fairings tack glued and planed / sanded to shape. Next, made a start on the removable cowl. More later...
Peter Miller
Hi Geoff. Have a look at my Stampe build to see how I do the tail fairing blocks.I know it is a little alte for you this time but it works really well
Geoff Gardiner
Hi Peter. Thanks for the input. I was half way there, got the spacer for the tailplane but not the fin!

Geoff Gardiner
I've got the wing servos sorted and have paused whilst I ponder / designed the colour scheme. And am now starting the covering. I'm using HobbyKing film. More later...
Peter Miller
THat is looking very good indeed. Now that Solarfilm is on its way out I am finding that the Hobbyking film is very good. If/when you can get the colours one wants. Edited By Peter Miller on 07/12/2019 08:32:

Geoff Gardiner
I haven't had much experience with iron on covering as I usually use glass fibre and paint for finishing my models. I am still yet to master the correct techniques for covering the wing tips. Peter, what temperatures do you set your iron for sticking and shrinking the hobbyking film? I am wondering if I am not going hot enough when trying to pull and stretch over compound curves.
Peter Miller
Hi Geoff I use the maximum setting for Hobbyking covering. That is on the normal standard covering iron. The secret of covering compound curves is to pull the covering while heating it and then pull it down. With a bit of practice it is amazing just how much of a compound curve you can cover. Admittedly Solarfilm was a little better in that respect but the hobbyking stuff is pretty good especially on Oodalally which has few really tight compund curves This cowl was covered with the HK stuff. Looks good from a few feet off
Geoff Gardiner
Thanks for that nugget of information Peter. I was being too conservative with the heat for the wing tips - cranked the dial right up and BINGO.

Geoff Gardiner
I have a question if I may: This is the scheme that I have come up with (Not to scale) I am wanting to put a checkerboard pattern on the underside of the wing. This would mean ironing it on top of the blue film which is over the open structure of the wing. Will this be ill advised as it is not a flat surface? Any comments gratefully received. Peter Miller
Yes, it can be done with some care. I would suggest positioning it and ironing it down round the edges with a cooler iron so the film does not shrink away. You can leave one small outlet at the outer edge to allow air to escape. Leave the film over length in this area soypu can iron it down afterthe rest is ironed down. Any bubbles left after the everything is ironed down can be punctured with a pin. I would suggest strating off with a smaller piece on the tailplane Edited By Peter Miller on 08/12/2019 18:18:
Geoff Gardiner
Thanks Peter. I'll sleep on it and see if I am brave enough to give it a try tomorrow. Top surface finished. More later...

Geoff Gardiner
Bit more done. Cut some vinyl decals with my silhouette portrait cutter. Glued on the tailplane. Added an infill piece between the elevators. Added some carbon tube and glued on the fin. Made a windscreen and printed a pilot. Added some exhaust stubs. More later...
