TN Hurricane

Hi Tony,

I was just wondering where you purchase the mechanical retracts with the sprung oleos, as they look so true to scale to the real hurricane.  I am cutting the parts from scratch so it is taking a while for the build!!

Also, Stuart, where do you live? I'm in Adelaide and am building the 63" version...

 Cheers, Sandy

Thanks Tony Nijhuis, for the brilliant Hawker Hurricane plan. !!!!I

would love to be able to build the full size version, but finance & limited available storage space, limit my options.

So I choose reluctantly, to build a 50% reduced model from your plan. (electric powered).

The (my) estimated 'Power Train' for the build. Ordered & arrived now, from Rob at the UK ( Giantcod ) website (Excellent quality components, at rock bottom prices!!),

Fuselage & tail feathers now well on the way (still just roughed out) at this time. a little more (main wing area at this size) I feel will help balance out all up weight tolerance?

... See enclosed picture. .............. Wor' Keith.

  • 2 weeks later...

This will be my first model with retracts,I have ordered the .60 size mech retracts by Ripmax which are the ones TN used,in the write up he says the servo was "Standard hi-torque 6kg servo"would that be standard servo or standard retract servo??

Does anyone know if you can use the SM Services servo slower on retract servo's?I'm sure I have read somewhere that you cannot? Thanks guys

John

I am building this project, at ( 50% reduction) due to limited space & financial restrictions,

from TN's plan.     Pilots head here is only 15mm ... so will cut away unwanted material & apply a thin layer of plastic based filler, ... then re shape and paint, to (roughly) resemble WW2 Pilots flight suit features.

So far so good. If the project works out well.  Will be able then perhaps, to try some of TN's other plans at the same scale.

wing rib no w8 has been cut wrong at the spar, it is cut about 3mm too far back. The spar joiners b1/b2 on the plan are shown on the rear of the spar, but in the cnc kit they have been cut on the front. this in its self is not a major problem, but you have to fix the webbing to the other side, or risk a weak join in the wing. also the plan appears to show the centre top spar in one piece, but in the build photos it shows two sub spars.I would appreciate your views on this.

Hello All,

I've just joined up - thought I'd add my experiences of this build as I go, as they might be of interest to others, as this thread is visible to all. I'm building slowly compared to others on the thread so far (my progress will be over months not days!) and this is only my third ever build (first a trainer, second a Loaded Dice 60S). I'd been saying that I wanted to build something scale next, possibly a Spitfire, before I learrnt of this project, so RCM&E and Tony's timing was absolutely perfect, thank you.

So I'm still learning as I go, particularly the building-from-plans part and almost certainly being happily ignorant of building techniques and tricks which are second nature to you all !  I'm building it full-size from the plans, using the CNC kit of parts, intending it will be electric powered.

The first oddity that I've encountered is when I went to fit F1.   My fuselage construction otherwise I think is OK, but the fuselage sides are going to need to be quite aggressively pulled in to meet the edges of F1, as F2 is  relatively close and holds the sides out. I'd not spotted that this was going to be the case, otherwise I might well have left gluing the triangular pieces at the bottom that run from F2 to F1, as they will make it even harder to bring the wood (which is already laminated by the doublers) in. Any advice?

Hello Hurricane builders,Glad to see its not just me with the build problems, its just taken 30 Min's to get up to speed with the threads. my photos so far of the build (more to follow soon), take heart in the knowledge it is only a plan and you are aloud to make changes so things line up and fit,........ i am fitting an RCV 91!... now that a squeeze.Enjoy, Glenn
