NEW POLL - has the covid pandemic deterred you from attending shows and events in 2021?

Recommended Posts

I think that larger outdoor events, suitably socially distanced and with a limited attendance (maybe all ticket) should be OK next year, depending on what happens over the coming winter. Fingers crossed for the Old Warden Model Air events. I'd still not be happy to attend an indoor event like a model exhibition until infection rates fall considerably from where they are now - still hovering around 1.

Disasterous for museums, conference and exhibition centres nationwide.

Nobody really knows what the situation will be by Spring 2021 (though it seems highly unlikely there will be an effective vaccine deployed at scale by that point), so I suspect most would answer "I'll wait and see" if that were an option. I doubt advance ticket sales would be popular though!

Personally I would be happy to attend open air events next year, but for me the mainstream shows were becoming increasingly uninteresting anyway - they are dominated by the big brand teams now, and frequently the same slots will start repeating even before lunchtime. Given that, increasing regulation, the aging profile of modelling in general and now Covid it is not going to be easy for the organisers of shows to make the sums work.

Me and my better half had a great day at Duxford last week and entry was by timed advance ticket. Nice weather, a pleasant tour round the site and a welcome spot of lunch at the outdoor eateries yes. Not a problem, so depending on the venue, advance ticketing to control attendance can be made to work. I think this will be the way forward for many places and not only in our sphere of interest. We're not doing any of Duxford's or Old Warden's Airshows though, I feel that the limited programmes and restrictions will spoil the day, but I hope that those who have decided to support the shows will have a good time.

Pre-Covid, I agree with Matty B about the state of many of our modelling shows / exhibitions and the present situation must only make it worse. Aging profile of the hobby, a differing approach by many younger people to hobbies and socialising is all brewing the perfect storm. Enjoy what we have, while you can and adapt to suit.

We must get back to normal life as soon as possible ( with suitable precautions of course) so I intend to go to Wings & Wheels and the three Old Warden ModelAir shows next year. But I won't be going to crowded indoor events like the London Model Engineering Exhibition at Alexandra Palace.

Let's hope the organisers of Wings & Wheels etc have enough faith too.

For the most part, the decision of whether to attend shows, etc, has been taken for us as most of them have been cancelled.

There is probably more risk of catching something "nasty" by shopping in a supermarket -- people seem to ignore social distancing in shops -- but it is still prudent to be cautious with outdoor events. . . Basically it is a "numbers game". . The more people who attend an event, the greater the risk of getting too close to the great unwashed.

I may be tempted to attend the odd fly In as I can see social distancing being controlled in that kind of environment.

However, I am flabbergasted that there is talk of upcoming shows this year after what has just happened. I really cant see it working safely and would need to be convinced in advance of what precautions are being put in place.

That said, I do hope those who are involved and attend are kept safe and it all works well.

This morning returning from an errand in the car, I drove past a large warehouse type business outside of which are signs saying "keep safe - stay two metres apart" etc. In front of the large notices were around twenty of that firm's employees in their hi-viz finery and enjoying their ciggies, bundled together some face to face, while having a laugh and a joke during their break. All in full public view, so an appalling example to set.

This sort of mentality is far from unusual and I suspect it'll also be found at many shows and events of all types, not just aeromodelling, that may well claim to be promoting their safety credentials to attract visitors but will not be able to control Cov-idiocy. Shows and other similar large events remain not for me at this time.

The uncertainty is an issue that continues to surprise me. There has been no BMFA region meeting now for some time. My two daughters and grandchildren have been in various lockdowns, for different reasons. The apparent inconsistencies seem legion, both daughters banned from wearing face coverings, at various times, for again differently stated reasons. All the colleagues of one daughter testing positive to having being exposed to the virus (one having died, another surviving after some time), except my daughter, who tested negative. When looked at many of the apparent anomalies, were driven by priorities, resources and many other factors.

Those who advocate that return to schools and business, are probably correct, as the evidence continues to grow that without education and an economy, the damage to many individuals and the general economy is massive.

So will I go to shows? They are certainly a benefit to the model trade, ensuring that our hobby has at least a chance of avoiding a premature demise. To be truthful i only attended one show last year, that was the LMA event at Haydock Park (a horse race course).

For me it is a wait and see, consider the risks, and the benefits. These are increasingly buying modeling odds and ends and some essentials.

Given we have now been to three restaurants using the government sponsored scheme, two at full price, we have not avoided all the obvious risks. Each week i now go to the Supermarket.

Yet it is obvious some people are either in denial or total idiots, who do not have any social conscience.

I've said, " yes, fewer events going forward" because that's nearest to my thoughts. "Going forward" seems rather long term to me. Really though, my own answer is no events until I feel safe. For all I know that could be later on in 2021, which isn't so far off. Just my way of thinking perhaps.

I would say that the return to normal will not happen this year if ever.

A new normal with some limits still in place is still some way off, at least until about 75% of the population have had their vaccination. And that supposes that another variant nasty does not show its ugly head.

For as long as people continue to prioritise "I want" over "I should", we'll continue to yoyo in and out of restrictions until or unless the vaccination program works for all the emerging mutations.

I believe that Covid and it's various iterations will become part of the continuous background of illness that we have to learn to live with one way or another.

If that means putting a mask on when visiting the Nats or Weston, then so be it. In Japan and Korea, wearing masks in public has been routine for decades. Hand sanitizer by the front door is commonplace. If we can't adapt our lives and hobbies to cope, it's a sad enditement on us as a species!

I'm just sitting tight and hoping for a return to some (limited?) return to normality in late spring and summer but that's all it is - hope. I'd like to go to a few shows and especially an RCME fly-in at Buckminster, which I enjoyed greatly in 2019.

Mask wearing in in eastern countries like Japan and Korea was common before the pandemic but it was because of air pollution rather than viral transmission. If we're asked to wear them at times in public to prevent another pandemic then I'll comply. I'm sure better, more comfortable masks will be marketed and make it less uncomfortable.

I am desperately missing the shows too, and if it means wearing a mask then I will, I'm probably best covered up anyway. frown

Regarding the mask, I wear my cycling tube/snood/buff thing, nice and comfy, then just pull it up when needed, it also keeps yer neck warm.

Lets all hope we can meet up at some shows this year Guys.
