EarlyBird
Again as I promised. Tomorrow the wings but I don't think I will finish them in a day. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Wings. I have made a start. Cheers Steve
kc
Thats a good start. Don't forget the paper tubes for servo leads need to go in very early on a one piece wing!
EarlyBird
Good timing KC I was determined not to forget the tubes this time. But I did forget again. All is not lost because all of the ribs have the hole Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Fitted shear webs, trailing edge and trailing edge sheeting. I am sure there was something else, which I must have forgotten, again. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Yes the servo tubes, thanks KC. Working on the leading edge today so to do that the board is turned around. The leading edge has to be shaped then fitted and the bottom sheet puled up, weights will be used to stop the wing lifting. Following that all of the top sheeting and cap strips can be done. Is the day long enough for all that, we will see. More later. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Leading edge, bottom and top sheets done Plenty of batteries and pins used for this. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
There is a wing under the batteries, Top sheet trimmed back to the leading edge and bottom sheet glued to the leading edge. Started the top sheeting That's as far it got. Enough for one day I am being told. Another good day in the workshop with plenty of practice making scarf joints. EarlyBird
Top sheeting and cap strips fitted. Leading edge trimmed, planed and sanded. Here is the sheeting close up. Good enough for me. All to do again on the bottom but there is only one wing. I have made a start by shaping the trailing edge and making a scarf joint with the trailing edge sheeting. EarlyBird
Thanks Peter I think I am starting to get the hang of this building Lark, Sky Lark me favourite song bird. With the aid of tape, pins, pegs and a yard stick the bottom trailing edge is fixed. Next is sheeting and cap strips again. Trevor
At the rate you’re going Steve, I trust that there’s a hangar somewhere near the top of your future builds list! Trevor
EarlyBird
Yes Trevor, hangar space is becoming an issue but I have a spare bedroom, just need to get rid of the bed. As promised bottom sheeting and capstrips fitted. Just servos and leading edge to sort out. The end is in sight, it must be as I am starting to think about covering. EarlyBird
I was having difficulty with the servo mounting yesterday but this morning while making a scarf joint for the leading edge cap strip I went with the bright idea made it up and test fitted but did not glue it as I had to go to the shops, fridge was empty. Walking back home I realised there was a flaw in my design in that once glued in the servo could not be removed. Back home made a small adjustment and fixed it in place. and the second one without the sheeting. I am not sure why I sheeted it but I was enjoying myself and maybe got a bit carried away. EarlyBird
Servos done and leading edge being shaped. Ailerons next and last A bit to do on the fuselage but not a lot. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
I seem to have missed a day. I was too tired yesterday due to the midnight fireworks, but I did remove the wing servos and finish the sanding. Today the Ailerons First one done and parts cut for the second one. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Second aileron done. I tried to make them as identical as I could. Not a lot of difference there! Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Two left ailerons on the last post But by magic, not really, I just turned one over. Ailerons cleaned up and hinges fitted. Almost ready for covering just wing bolt plate and servo lead holes to cut. Cheers Steve

EarlyBird
You saw my trap and said nothing Just adding to the fun As it happens I was going to draw the right aileron, as would be done with the wing, but then something told me I could just flip it over. To my complete surprise it obviously worked. Now I am trying to work out why this approach would not work with the wings. As this has a symmetrical wing it should work? Hmm maybe not. Thanks John, Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
That would be nice Peter.
kc
Flipping the wings over would only work if the ribs were completely symmetrical - which they appear to be in this desgn. Otherwise the 'tabs' would have to be on the top of the ribs rather than underside. Really it's easier to just use tracing paper and trace just the ribs and spar positions with little other detail. EarlyBird
Yes KC I see what you mean. Not a lot yesterday. Just a bit of sanding and two hinges fitted, and not very good workmanship. No rush as there is a shortage of balsa and plenty of time in the workshop now Hang on what am I thinking I need to finish this and the RF-4 then there is The Ohmen waiting to be started. Plenty to do so it's onwards and upwards today. I'll be back. too many film references? Cheers Steve
