Tom, welcome to the forum from me.

You say your aircraft project has a 'balsa wood skeletal structure', can you use carbon fibre as well? A few judicious carbon tows in the right places can add large amounts of strength for minimal additional weight, as I am sure you are aware. Also, using carbon fibre in combination with foam, for wing ribs for instance, can make for a strong lightweight structure. Additionally, I expect you have heard that there is a balsa shortage at present so sourcing lightweight balsa can be a problem.

What is the specified motor for your project and are you limited to how many watts it can produce or the size/cell number of battery, for instance? In other words is there a prescribed formula for your project apart from wing span?

Best of luck, Tom. It sounds an interesting project. You've come to the right place for some practical advice.

Peter Miller has been designing model aircraft since Big Ben was a wrist watch and has written books about it and had many successful designs published and Simon Chaddock has a unique talent for unusual designs, to name just two. So listen and learn
