Depron Availability

Having come across Julius Perdana depron builds on Youtube thought I would like to have a go at some of his designs.

Surprised to find that all the UK past suppliers I have used in the past years currently have nil stock of white 5mm. Then found a post of Youtube stating that the US manufacture is no longing making depron sheets so wondered if that is the case in the UK. So is this the case now that Depron in sheet form is no longer made? See the Grey is still available but found that a lot weaker in strength to the white.

Have you tried Gliders in Newark.

The hobbycraft foam board isnt too bad and there is always the graupner vector board which comes in a number of thicknesses which makes it bendable. The one thing i would recommend is a good scalpel and a whetstone. Its cheaper and easier to sharpen your blades, foamboard is one of the best materials for blunting steel!!

I made this Seafury from foam board , balsa and covered it with grey depron. it is 57" wingspan due to lockdown it has only had 2 flights but fly's well. The firm that was a big supplier now only sells grey depron and the 3mm is round about £84 for 40 sheets the 6mm is about the same price for 20 sheets . There is one Ebay seller asking £55 for one sheet that is quite a mark up if he is getting 40 for £84. One thing to watch for is the depron bend one way and cracks the other so I always take a small piece noting which way I cut it from the sheet and bend it gently either way that gives an idea which way the grain is it will snap easily in one direction.  Graupner vector board is out of production now as Graupner  are no longer trading. dsc_0764[1206].jpg

I thought Vector Board was gone.

... and the same or similar thing was available as Flexi Foam **LINK**

The 3mm stuff is pretty bendy. For flat structures it certainly needs something to make it rigid. A tubular shape can be pretty rigid on its own.

Yes, Diall Polystyrene Insulation board Size's (L)0.8m (W)0.6m in thickness's of - 3mm - 6mm -9mm.

The board plan dimensions in inches is 31 1/2 times 23 1/2, the 6mm pack, I think there is 8 sheets in the pack, it's best to check the stock in each store on line before you go down to pick it up, or order on line.

B & Q stock it. **LINK**

The foam works and models really well just like depron. I've purchased many packs in the sizes -3mm -6mm and the 9mm. I mainly glue it together with hot glue, however I've just purchased my first supply of UHU por.

Current foam project.

A neighbour had these blue wings, he lost the fuselage in a spiral dive many years ago, it was the Hitec Sky Scout version, I was more than happy to build him a fuselage in the current lockdown.

Above an old advert from the pages of RCME (2003 ) for the original rudder elevator and motor control model.

Dial foam

It's been test flown and he's purchased a new transmitter for his 8 year old son to hopefully fly it this spring.

It happens his dad really enjoyed flying it again, so I set to to build him a fuselage and the wing I'm still working on.

Found Glider Distribution do sell Depron, but again nil stock so can only assume this current Covid problem has had an affect on supplies.

Finding several other specialist building related products that I want are in short supply, so hopefully things will be back to normal in 6 months....we can but hope!

Andy, for stock availability I've just checked around the London area form B&Q and there's up to 90 packs of 6mm in stock.

Also checked for 5mm here at 'Paper Gourmet' **LINK**

Andy, I've purchased from the above supplier. I made this model from a 'one sheet pattern ' - of the 5mm foam board. Alpha Jet at 20 inch wing span.

One sheet pattern

Test flown in the garden prior to the side engine pods attached and radio gear installed for glider flying off the local slope.
