David Hall 9
My RES Dart kit build is going well. One wing basic build is complete. Just looking ahead to fitting the various surfaces, the spoiler is 35x190mm and the material given in the kit is medium 1.5mm balsa sheet. Is this suitable? Seems a bit light.... John Stainforth
Yes, does seem a bit lightweight and probably prone to warping. I would be tempted to laminate two 1/32" (or 0.8 mm) balsa sheets together, with their grains at right-angles. I think that would cure both potential problems. Matt Carlton
As above, put the grain at 45 degrees to the wing surface and at right angles to each other. Alternatively, two layers 1/64 ply with a 1/32" balsa core with the grain vertical.
John Stainforth
Yes, 45 and 45 degrees would be best. As another permutation, how about a single core of 1/64 ply sandwiched between two layers of 1/32" balsa. The core could have some cut-outs to reduce weight.
