Geoff Copping
My first ever flight in an aeroplane was in a Dragon Rapide from Cranfield College on a pleasure flight with my Dad when I was 7 years old. Yes, I could see my house from up there? My Dad worked at Cranfield and I began my aircraft apprenticeship there at 15yrs old. I often see the Rapide while I'm fishing at Grafham Water and it brings back memories. Lovely old plane.

leccyflyer
Marvellous - thanks for sharing such a fantastic experience - you're a lucky man indeed. ? We did a family trip in the DH Dragon Rapide at Duxford back in the noughties, but we didn't have a Spitfire escort. I especially liked the escape briefing about using the tear-away circular hatches in the roof - made for smaller folk in the 30's, I think I could maybe just about fit my head through, but that's all. ? Colin Carpenter
SWMBO arranged a ride in the DH89 for my 50th. All the way from Somerset to Duxford to find that one manifold had failed and was being replaced ! Long wait ! Eventually we’re off and it gets to the take off point and goes round in circles. Brake failure ! Back to the tower where passengers are asked if they will wait again. Only 2 of us agreed . Flight cancelled! 2 months later I get the flight. Marvellous! Especially when pilot puts a wingtip over Canary Wharf and revolves around it ! Never got petrol reimbursement or free lunch tho ! David P Williams
One of my favourite aeroplanes. I had a trip in one a few years ago from Newquay Airport when we were on holiday in Cornwall. No Spitfire, but a fantastic experience, with an extra 5 minutes following an aborted approach in a strong crosswind.
Chris Bott - Moderator
Excellent video Peter. Worth the wait, I'd say.
Gary Manuel
Lovely video and quite an experience. It raises a question in my rather naive brain though. How are full sized aircraft allowed to fly so close together without it being classed as a near miss? Presumably it needs to be in the flight plan and maybe pilots need to be specially qualified? Anyone know?
