Martin Harris - Moderator
I was browsing some old reference material from a full size gliding magazine (S&G) and happened upon this: Just wondering if anyone went to it - younger forum members can move on swiftly! Was prize money a regular feature in competitions 40 odd years ago or was this a one-off I wonder? I do remember that there were quite a few model gliders on display at Lasham during a full size vintage rally some years later so perhaps these events carried on for a few years? (From the later event - my daughter (pictured inspecting the Kirby Kite) has a 17 year old daughter herself now!)
Outrunner
Interesting find Martin, generous prise money on offer including money for every entrant. I've never seen anything like that before pity they don't offer money to enter theses days. Is your daughter still interested in model flying? Colin Carpenter
Not in the same league in prize money , but when I entered my first boat multi race in 1971 in Hove I won ten bob (50p) !!Cant remember where I came but must have been in the top 3!!?? Nick Somerville
I would wager that the 1/4 scale Kirby Kite was designed and built by John Watkins. After I saw it sky out on a light thermic day at Romanway (Oxford) I bought a plan from him and built my own (Featured in Radio Modeller at the time). Martin Harris - Moderator
The full size that it was modelled on was owned by a friend at Dunstable and had been regularly flown there (and crashed) by Amy Johnson in the 30s. IIRC he'd taken it to that vintage rally at Lasham. I do wonder if any of the models have survived...perhaps on display somewhere?
