Pilot - RC Slick 67" first look and build

Recommended Posts

Next work shop visit will be to set the working surfaces. The manual suggests the aileron deflection as 20 deg with 40% expo, elevators 20 deg deflection, 40% expo and rudder 35 deg with 40% expo as a starting point. Full 3D aeros suggest 38deg aileron deflection & 60% expo, elevators 55 deg deflection & 50% expo with the rudder 45deg deflection and 50% expo. I will report back on the process.

Te layout I settled on was as per photo. All of the weight needs to be at the front and as a result I used a bigger RX battery than I would have chosen.IMG_0651.thumb.jpg.2bb729e79879da89a6bd15d106d6de07.jpg

Plenty of room for positioning the RX and switch.

I have entire outdoor planes that would fit in there.......

Set them at 25 degs vs 20 degs for "general flying".

Same methodology for the rudder at 30degs (vs 35 deg), then finished the pushrods  with keepers and blue thread locker for the nuts.

No maiden yet, but I have problem I can't fathom. I decided to fit the SFG on wing tips. Easier said than done! Now I may be a bit thick here .........

Easy release system as shown.

two screws that appear to go through the SFG in pre-drilled holes. But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to screw them in to! ?

The manual doesn't shed any light on the matter.

Any ideas??

Well I found some washers and nuts that came with the kit. Only problem there is only two nuts instead of four! I will have to see if I can hunt some out in the work shop or it's Model Fixings again.

For aesthetic reasons I decided to spray paint the thumb screws red to go with the covering colour rather than keep them as the white plastic. Only because I had time after coming back from flying a few sorties this morning (too dull & and cold, but I can see why I am branded an enthusiast!).

Cracking day for a maiden flight. Clear blue sky and around 6mph wind. Bicycle clips fitted and checked ?. Here are some phots and a video.

By the way I needed to cut slots for the aileron servo wires - something I only discovered at the field ?

the video clip is nothing special as I have a head cam GoPro which is limiting, but nevertheless you get the idea.I was a bit nervous before starting because I wasn't sure if the batteries were able to be as far forward as they should be for correct CoG, but after 4 flights it's about right if a little rearward.

The debrief is as follows. Trim was 2 clicks right aileron, 2 clicks up elevator. Needs a bit of right rudder, but not established how much as I think there is a slight motor thrust issue (more down?) although nothing major required. There wasn't much wind but despite that she was a bit floaty on finals such that a couple of landing approaches had to be aborted. No sweat though.  I checked my lipos after flights of around 6 minutes - see below. 3.78-3.80v per cell which says more about the state of the lipos as they are far from new. Altogether a good start with more fun to be had.

Just thought I would check in with how wear and tear is going after 31 flights.

Firstly, one of the nylon (?) wing bolts is now unusable with the end of the thread shredded. I think I am going to replace with a metal one if I can find the right size. I have some spare nylon ones but I am not happy to use them now.

Next issue came with the rudder steering bar which snapped off during a landing I guess.

The original rod was threaded and I have tried to drill it out of the collet but to no avail. Looks like I am going to have try and find something in my spares box ......

Flight-wise she is pretty lively and fun to fly. She does float nicely into land despite what has happened to the rudder. I guess I must have thumped the tail at some point!

I have effected a repair to the rudder using a spare steering rod collet. As it is taller than the original and fouls on the rudder I have had to raise the tail wheel assembly using ply for it to work.

If this doesn't do the job properly I have found a spare assembly by Extreme Flight ordered from Nexus Models.
