WHICH ENGINE?

Good Morning and thanks for all that. Now, I'm even more perplexed with all the options

Jon, of course a brand new laser is tempting. The problem is that Mrs ernie, will want to hang bits of it around her neck, or dangle them from her ears

Also the French customs are now adding astronomical amounts to imports

Let me go and have a fine French lunch, and a wee think

Just to throw another into the mix. Try an Enya 60 4c if you can ind one. I currently have one in a twice size Ladybird 84 inch span and it flies that brilliantly

Plenty of power for take off and once airbourne flies around at mid throttle. As you say brilliant for gentle flying on a summers evening.

Enya made great engines, a 53 or 60 would be nice. Even their 80 (pretty rare) is actually a 72 if i recall and might be worth a look if you can find one. The only snag is spares as i think enya have stopped making engines.

Delivery to the EU is impossible you are quite right. We have had to abandon the whole EU market until we can rustle up an EU distributor as its just a nightmare. Its not the tax that is the problem, its the charges they impose for the privilege of paying the tax, not to mention the 12 weeks they hang on to the package while they decide how much they want to rob you. Most irritating but it is what it is.

OK, now I’m wondering.

I have wanted a Falcon for 60 years. I have a plan, a pair of wheels, but no time. But it’s on the list. I thought to do electric, as I no longer have IC engines small enough for this.

I have worked out that a HobbyKing 4250 350kv motor will do the job, and I have batteries, speed controller, so no big outlay. And the nice low KV motor will allow me to swing an efficient big diameter prop.

But, I do own an RCV SP60, (that’s the one with a 2 to 1 reduction gearbox) and wonder if there is any reason why I can’t use this, but use a large fine pitch prop to   provide the urge.
I don’t know which path I will follow, but would like to be well informed.

oh dear an RCV .60,?,, don't ,i sold mine off they get very hot and won't give you a slow and reliable idle,,,

Not worried about cooling, properly designed baffles, to move air through the fins works. It is a easy starter, has a reliable tickover.

I would think the rcv would be just fine. Stick a huge prop on it, get the revs down to about 4200 at the prop and i expect it would be quite civilised. I need to get the rcv 120 i was given last year into something to continue my testing with it. They are certainly very interesting engines to play with.

Is the RCV up and running Jon?

Yes and no. I got it rebuilt with new bearings and test ran it a few times but i need to get the special props on order and find an airframe for it. Its on my long list of things to do!

Not really, I’ve shifted to electric for stuff under an 80 size 4T motor, but I will be building a Falcon, nostalgia, at some point. And a power plant option is needed. I might go electric on it, or having remembered I’ve got the RCV 60, put that in.
Nostalgia stops after the shape of it, as I will probably redraw the plan to use modern light materials and techniques, cut 20% of the weight out, so electric power is only one more heresy.

Hi all,  Beside me as I write this is a nearly completed Keil Kraft Falcon. Its big, 8 foot in old money, but hopefully not too heavy.

My query is what do I use to power it. E******* is of course not possible, and it sort of has to be a four stroke;    I have also beside me 2 candidates, a new OS V95, a bang up to date 4 stroke, which is too big, and a OS FS40 which is maybe a wee bit on the small side. What do you all think?

ernie

i have in my possession 3 engines that might be of use to you OS Alpha, 56 ,72 and 81. the 81 is all new in its box. The other two are in A1 condition and had very little use  On price the 81 are/ were about £80 more than your 95v the 72 are £438 and the 95v are £372
