KYTEN

Video of second flight, trying out stall, glide, inverted flight, spin, CG etc. certainly need to change the CG and launch finger holes (too deep). The problem with trying to move the battery back is that it’s buried in the rear fuselage and can only be accessed through the cockpit. I may need to make a hatch in the rear fuse to make the battery placement easier.

I’ve re-propped it now, it was running an 8 x 4 but it’s now  a 7 x 7. Ground testing  shows the following:

On 4S - 500 watts @ 40 amps, on 5S - 800 watts @ 60 amps.

As the model weighs 3.75lbs it should go quite well on the 5S setup but as I’m wary of hand launching with that bacon slicer ‘out back’ I’ve made a launch trolley from some 20mm conduit.

And with extension pieces it can be used for others too

Really windy conditions today which were across the runway, this made using the trolley a bit difficult as it hasn’t got steering and the ‘planes I tried it with haven’t got rudders! So hand launch for the Kyten and it’s only flight was using 4S on the 7 x 7 prop.

Very pleased with the new RunCam Thumb, but forgot to switch the GoPro (hat cam) on for the start of the flight!

To give some idea about the crosswind, here is a light aircraft coming in to land.

Kyten R.I.P ?

After many flights it met its end today on its second flight of the day. I had been flying around for a few minutes then came down for a ¼ throttle fly by, there was a could of smoke and all control was lost with the Kyten rolling into the ground from about 30 feet - total write off. There culprit appears to be the ESC which burnt out one of the 3 phase cables to the motor (which is unharmed!).

From my post above:

Having dismantled the model to recycle various bits, the actual culprit has been revealed

Shame that I didn’t have a UBEC and separate battery pack powering the servos, that would have saved the model. Easy to be wise after the event!

RECYCLE!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 That's just little more than a scratch Ron. I had a mid air with my B.T. Tempest same day as your mishap, it took the wing off and the fuselage with a 5s 5000 up front found the quickest way down, apart from a small hole the wing was ok.  It's ready to fly again.

And it wasn’t going that fast and wasn’t too high but the grass strip is as hard as concrete!

Ron,

So do you think the motor took the ESC out or the other way around?

IMO, the ESC is most inefficient at low throttle settings (produce the most heat) because of the switching of the power transistors. On that basis I would say the ESC power transistors (on one phase) failed and cooked the motor winding. It must have been a high current as it damaged the insulation on a motor cable. with that much current going through the ESC it probably over heated the components on the BEC side and killed that.  Any noise prior to loss of control?

Who is the manufacturer of the ESC & motor BTW out of interest?

As the motor and ESC are cream crackered could you do me a favour and just strip the heat shrinking sleeve on both the motor and ESC bullet connectors? Just a theory?

PS IMHO the moor windings on the non damaged section look quite ropy and to be honest ..not really surprised the motor gave up when the windings are as poorly wound as that.

The esc is (was) a Hobbywing Skywalker and the motor was the one in my old Motion RC Havoc listed as Skynetic.

I’ll dig the bits out of the bin and post up some pics for you Chris.

There was no noise or any indication anything was wrong prior to the crash, I was coming through nice and straight at about 25% throttle, 20/30ft off the deck when there was a plume of smoke and it flick rolled into the ground. There was no response to Tx wag stickling. I don’t really understand why it rolled, if the motor / esc packed up and the Rx lost power then I would have thought that the control surfaces would have stayed as they were, neutral for level flight. I must check the Rx!
