john davidson 1
Just had a phone call from a very efficient sounding lady purporting to be from City Council Tax Consultants, the gist was that I am in council tax band D when I definitely should be in band C. For a fee of £198 they would reclaim £3000 , If you did it yourself they claim, it would need a surveyor etc. and a lot of knowhow and persistence whereas they have it all set to go.(and take payment today) When they are giving this spiel it is believeable , only when you step back do you understand how clever it is

Outrunner
I always regard ANY cold call wether via telephone or a knock at the door as a scam and refuse to do any business with them.
J D 8
There is a fellow on You tube who breaks into on line scammers sites pretending to be a potential victim and while they try and talk him into some scam he takes control of their computers and cameras. Some are offices with many scammers in them in a far away land. After taking control he tells them where they are that he is not talking to "Steve" but more likely " Gupta" The panic that takes hold as they realise what is happening is brill.?
Andy Stephenson
That may have been the same fellow who got into the scammer's webcam and told them exactly what they he could see them doing. Frank Skilbeck
It could be a scam, but CCTC are a real company and you can challenge your council tax valuation, https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band. When we bought our house new (a long time ago!) my wife successfully challenged the valuation and we ended up in one band lower, at the time there were solicitors will to do this for a fixed fee and we know a few who used their services and also got their band changed, we just saved the fee! kc
After we sold our old house the new owners challenged the rating and got it reduced - the council then also automatically sent us a refund for the previous years!
Caveman
We challenged the Council Tax banding of our house some years ago. No need for consultants, surveyors or anyone else, just contact the council, fill in the relevant forms and await the council's decision. We were successful and the reduction was back-dated for 6 years - very nice! GDB
