martin collins 1
Looking to use one or other of these engines in a 1/4 scale Gee Bee Y, i have to get under 80dBa, which of these would be more likely to do that out of the box? Looking for comments on both these engines from those that use them please...........
Frank Skilbeck
Watching with interest, I'd like to re-engine our electric tug with a petrol engine, but we have to meet 82 dBa @ 7m at our site. I gave up with a DLA 32cc on another model and put a Laser 150 in it.
Peter Jenkins
It all comes down to how much you pay for your silencer. Stock silencers for petrol engines are a waste of time! Even some cheap canisters don't do the job. There are exhausts that will do an excellent job but they cost well over £100 and will need some room either in or outside the fuselage to be mounted. Krumschied is a make that will sort you but at a cost! As a generalisation, about half the cost of a DLE is needed for good silencing. cymaz
Our noise limit is a bit higher, ( 84dB), but I’ve had some success by covering the entire exhaust downpipe in silicone tube. This deadens the “ringing” as the exhaust exits the downpipe. I’d also get the twin as there’s smaller combustion strokes.
