craig procter
Can anyone tell me what they use on their scale models paint wise, is enamel paint fuel proof?
Martin Harris - Moderator
Humbrol? Definitely not.
Nigel R
Flair spectra and guild materials both claim to be fuel resistant, note resistant not proof. I've no experience with either, though.
Rich Griff
Humbrol, no, not with glow fuel, but seems to cope ok with mt d1000 diesel fuel ok... Glow fuel will attack humbrol....
jrman
I've used both Spectra and Guild. Neither work in my experience, certainly not with 10% nitro. If you want total fuel proofing then use epoxy paint or clear.
Paul De Tourtoulon
I found only polyurethane and epoxy paint hold up to any fuel, use your Humbrol or Tamiya acrylic paint and varnish it,,,
Andy Stephenson
I use Rustins Plastic Coat 2 part, it's the closest you'll get to the old Tufcoat, it works with at least 10% Nitro. Don't spray it without some serious PPE though.
Nigel R
Andy what paint are you using underneath?
Eric Robson
I have a 60" span Warbirds Replicas Hurricane finished with Guild mat enamel fuel proof paint from aerosols, not cheap but it seems to be OK. It has had a lot of flights now with a Saito 82B up front, quite a messy engine compared to a Laser but the paint work has not suffered. I waited about a month after painting before running the engine, the fuel is 5% nitro which I use all the time so I can't comment on higher nitro content fuels. My next project a Hawker Seafury has a petrol engine and I tried some petrol on a the guild paint and it was OK so I have used it on the Seafury, the only problem is a limited range of colours. I use rattle can car undercoat. Edited May 21, 2022 by Eric Robson
Andy Stephenson
Nigel, For colour, I use acrylic car aerosol or cellulose from a spray gun. Enamel won't work well, it will pucker as Rustins has some incompatible solvent in it and you would be advised to add more to spray it. Water based colour may work though.
