Thread: Connie are you to much for me?

Now whats next?

05/09/2018 13:46:42

And here she is pretty much finished.

Its been a long and sometimes difficult project, but I have enjoyed it.

Made a real push to get Connie finished,

Done all the filling and sanding, Then the painting of the wing.

My son did the markings for me and I made my own Decals. Never done this before but it worked well and were nice to use.

Bit of an odd choice perhaps but for me it would be my Britflight Breeze. Really cheap to get airbourne and lovely to fly and quite aerobatic. Fun per pound spent could not be beat and always in my car when I went flying. Gutted when I stacked it too badly to repair and by then they had stopped production so I could not get another.

The hatches fit like this,

Nice short linkages and work nicely.

24/06/2018 16:27:19

Then I made new hatches and fitted servo mountings.

24/06/2018 16:23:55

Using the old push rods I managed to get servo extensions through the wings.

And I removed the servo mounting in the centre section.

24/06/2018 16:22:08

The lower wing already has linkage in for ailerons with one servo in the centre.

I fitted a standard servo but I did not like it. The motion was stiff and clunky with very poor centering.

So! I cut open one wing to find this.

So i cut away the mountings for the bell crank and boxed it in and ended up with this.

Thanks Colin,

I appreciate that especially coming from yourself with some of the builds you have under your belt !

Connie has flown at last!

I have been looking at her in the corner of my workshop for a while and been trying to get up enthusiasm for a last push to get her finished. well on Wednesday I decided to test fly her again as she is in the hope this would get me going again.

It was a lovely day so egged on by some of my club-mates I tried a fast taxi, this went fine so I turned her around and taxied back to myself, turned her into wind, took a deep breath and opened the throttle fully, off she went at a good rate, I eased in some up elevator and she lifted off nicely and climbed away at a good rate.

After my experience on the last flight where she would not turn very well on aileron I had increased the throws and mixed in quite a lot of aileron differential. Well this time she turned nicely and I flew an easy circuit. She looked really smashing in the air!

Not wanting to push my luck I flew one more circuit and lined her up for landing. She surprised me and came in quite fast so I bounced her a bit but otherwise fine.

Once back in the pits I discovered I had bent the u/c legs a bit but that is all.

Now there are no more excuses and I am determined to get her finished soon, Just really a bit of filling and painting to do.

Had a couple more flights now and I am getting more used to her. No issues really, quite a nice flier.

I have fitted the snake outers into the slots in the fuselage, and filled in the rest with scraps of balsa.

And a new ply infill piece has been fitted.

Also the old infill has benn cleaned off the bottom of the tailplane as best I can.

10/06/2018 15:50:47

Ok thanks David.

What is yours powered by? I am thinking about a 52 4 stroke. Will that be about right do you think?

10/06/2018 15:34:58

First step I looked at why the tail-plane and fin had cone loose, It turns out it had just broken loose.

I will cut out the broken infill between the stringers and from the bottom of the tail-plane and replace with a new piece of ply.

I was lucky enough to be given this by a club member who has had to stop flying, after a conversation about models we lusted after as kids.

This will be a gentle blog about the refurbishment. It will be fitted in around other projects so will not be very fast!

The build quality is very nice, It has never had radio gear or engine fitted and is covered in Solartex I think.

And here she is today after a sucesful test flight this morning.

The test went really well, She looked great in the air and flew really well. She has plenty of power on the set up.

I learnt my lesson from the first test and tried the flaps at height! Strangly this time there was very little pitch change, so I am not really sure now what happened last time!

28/05/2018 15:35:12

Well here she is all rebuilt and ready to go.
