|Thread: Warbirds Replicas P51 Mustang|
In case anyone is interested I obtained a set of these cheapy taps and dies to make all my threaded rods where needed.
A small 'GOTCHA' to be aware of is where I passed the snakes through the rear of the fuz I took the elevator snake to the top of the balsa but not through the ply inner.
Now this is fine for the rudder as all aligns well but for the elevator it's a little too low.
When you come to do this you might want to go a little higher through the ply or as in my case made a little offset rod to connect it up. It needs to go on the very end of the horn. This still gives lots of elevator movement so no worries of not enough throw.
Most of my warbirds usually have no more than about 5mm to 8mm of throw for normal flying. That's plenty for most scale warbird flight.
Well guys it just had to be done... added a radiator cowl door.
used some scrap 1/8" ply from the kit to form the sides and the piece of balsa removed from the cut out.
Two reasons I added it, one it looks the part and two the incoming cooling air from the chin inlet will create a through draft to help keep all the electronics cooler.
You'll be fine, don't try to rush to 'keep up' the real magic happens when it gets painted.
Look at the flap droop... just like the real thing.
Did I say flaps? I think they maybe air brakes...
It was sure worth the extra work to have no gapping slit trench on the top of the wing.
Tail infill trimmed
Well here in the undergrowth we find a new P51B taking it's first steps a little unsteady on it's spindly legs.... look out it's being stalked by a predatory reindeer...... yes I have lost the plot.
Empty mate your too late...
Did a trial fit of the tail now the wing is finished.
All sanded covered, hinged and glued together now I can use the wing to check alignment.
Still a lot to do to finish the Fuz but see the light at the end of the tunnel... Pilot looks indignant needs painting.... still.
I got it from hobby King, very useful.
And yes the laminate adds a lot to the strength
Next I just had to advance the fuz..
Bottom sheeting going on.
Then it happened I couldn't help it it had to be done.......
Pilot base trimmed and glued on.
Seat fitted along with radio box. Pilot is not fixed as needs painting but had to try it out..
The wing is complete all but the control horn links.
I used film as per Grahams film covering master class but found that if you did get any lines/wrinkles turn your iron up to 150 to remove any remaining defects, Don't start with a hot iron as it makes it a little more prone to putting in wrinkles. As I had already covered the flaps/ailerons I found the narrower film allowed me to cover the wing. top then bottom in one piece.
Wing all done...
The rib in this picture was removed and straightened and scrap 1/8" used to go behind the spare nearest the leading edge the support it till the skins went on. But it shows how I did it.
The camera does exaggerate the amount it's about 2° but Richard's design also incorporates a clever feature in the wing which helps to reduce tip stall....sshhh top secret.
Same both sides.... wash-out.
A quick bit of info.
For some reason I see some of your posts then they dissappear I have emailed the forums tech help. If in the meantime you want to ask me a particular question pm me to make sure I can see it.
I let you know if and when it gets resolved.
Wing Dowels make sure you us a couple of pieces of the thin (from the wing fairing) ply to pack the wing when gluing on the locating dowels. Mine is different as this kit had a ply plate yours will not. it's not really needed as the dowels will fit into the front spar so this plate wasn't necessary but I had it so I used it.
Leading edge finished.
Okay been fitting the wing fairings. be liberal with the amount of cuts to ease the fitting to the curve and as per the manual fit them with the wing in place. don't forget the plastic/cling film to prevent gluing them to the wing.
All sanded to profile.
Still a long way to go but...... hey I'm in front of you guys...
Jonathan. for some reason I only see your posts once on my mobile then they vanish???
But to answer your request.
Can I sell you any balsa shavings? Very rare.... very cheap £100?
Oh and I think due to the Balsa shortage I have found a good opportunity to become a millionaire overnight here....
£100.00 a bag
Okay now I know a lot of you have received your kits... so who's done what?
