Thread: New EDF Mini Jets- Hawk & Lightning

Well it took 6 months to rebuild (not because i'm slowcheeky) but retested the EE Lightning yesterday having removed the complicated Aileron control and reverting to tailerons......a much easier servo installation and simple to set up......the results were it still had great althourity but the full roll was much slower.....mind you that's no bad thing as the aileron version was a little too rapid on the roll.....

The modified single fan version......

06/01/2020 09:31:42

So Roy, the answer is both!!!!......after the success of the twin fan version, i modified the single fan version and flew this yesterday and it went great.....

Hi Alan,

Happy new year to one and all....

Test flew this one at Headcorn as I needed the launching arm of Andy Boxall.....Have just retested the smaller single fan version with tailerons and a reduced thrust pipe diameter at the outlet and....SUCCESS

30/12/2019 16:26:24

So the single fan version wasnt a success in terms of speed and performance but it was such a stable and lovely model to fly......sooooo stable. So I decided to increase the size by 30% and fit a second 50mm edf fan (side by side)....and SUCCESS!!!

Decide to make this one with built up wing and use Tailerons for simplicity. So two 3S FMS fans and operating from a single 4S 4000mah 30C lipo... AUW at the moment 2 1/4 lbs. Easy to hand launch too

So the new twin fan TSR2 has been finally tested......

Great to know the mini jets are being considered for this years mass i have to give a little credit to David Ashby on this one as two years ago, he did come up with the mini jet idea.....and the rest is thanks Davidwink

Also think the idea of making your own choice is a great idea as it will swell the number of interested parties. The great thing about the mass build it will hopefully share the amazing aeromodelling tallent of you guys with newbies and hopefully push the boundaries of the design concept. I do hope that participates will 'do there own thing' with the new EDF power units coming along.

So at the moment you have 6 models to choose from and all of them use the same setup in terms of EDF and battery so there is no losers or winners when it comes to cost or performance.

There will be a couple more next year (EE Lightning & BAC Hawk) so hopefully there will be enough to choose from....

No Andy.....its planned for next year anyway........I unfortunately crashed it a couple of weeks fault... doing a farmborough pass flat out at zero feet and caught a wing tip.....considering the speed, i was surprised how little damage there was

Ok so put the wings on, cut a 40 x 40 hole and go and fly it.......smileythumbs up

26/07/2019 17:11:22

Try putting the nose of the model on the kitchen scales.....switch them on and they will zero with the weight of the model on them....then give it WOT with just lateraily supporting the model

25/07/2019 21:31:58

I find it unexplainable why this model dose not fly.....If you telling us you measure the thrust of the model at worst being 350g which is 14oz, against an AUW of 21oz you have a 67% thrust to weight ratio which is ample......My sabre flew on a 50% thrust to weight ratio using the cheap AEO fan!

I can only suggest the 40mm x 40mm cheat opening in the underside. Also check your speed controller is giving max is a 40amp controller i assume?

All the latest designs i have produced use the FMS50mm 3s fan and the AUW range from 22oz to 26oz!!!

one last and curious point, did you know you used the Mig canopy on your Sabre!!!!
