Thread: New EDF Mini Jets- Sabre & MiG15 RCM&E 2018 Special
24/07/2019 21:29:34

Colin,

Firstly the 600g is a guideline as to a 'manufactures stated thrust' which is always in 'open field testing' on a test rig. When buying a fan, you only have the manufactures stated thrust to 'BUY' to!. Im saying that a fan unit with a manufactures stated thrust of 600g, in a model such as the Sabre, will fly it very well indeed. It would be ridiculous to expect modeller to test the thrust of an EDF in there own model and then compare that to a specification....

I know from 'open field' test on a rig the FMS 50mm fan on 3S (11.1V) you will get around 620g or thereabouts. However, put this into model and that figure WILL be reduced due to air flow resistance both in front of the fan and losses after the fan....You could easily lose 50% of your thrust but the model will still fly....why???? because i used a rubbish AEO fan in the test Sabre, that could only muster 380g in free air (and probably 150g once in the model) and that still flew!!!

So if your getting 350g in the model, tested......it will go like a rocket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having now developed a further six more jets, the secret is a cheat hole (40mm x 40mm or equiv. CSA) in the under side of the fuselage just 15mm or so in front of the fan and this will UNLOCK the performance of fan. The Sabre side scoops would then be redundant.....

30C Lipos are fine....1800 to 2200mah...perfect......anything more may add thrust but this will be offset against the weight increase.......

20/07/2019 12:53:57

The A10 will be some time off and will be two size....a 44" span for 2x50mm fans...hand launch and 55" span for 2x70mm with retracts....both using the FMS 4S fans

It was sooo easy to design, i couldnt not do it.......here's another just designed

Well there has been 8 mini jets to date, 2 in last years RCME special, 1 in the next issue of RCME and 5 more to come over the next year in RCM&E......so is that the end...?????.....well not quite......

Here's the final offering and yet another indulgence for me....the TSR2 on a single 50mm EDF...wings are a little stretched buy hey, let see what happens

Glad you got there in the end Marc.....the little FMS fans don't disappoint

Thread: New EDF Mini Jets- Hawk & Lightning
04/06/2019 17:17:23

Reno....you may be right about the FMS unit...lol.....they'll just have to step in production in China wont they

The Lightning I have now tried on a 3S fan with 3S lipo and made some internal modifications to allow better air distribution and happy to report the model works well....I still will only be recommending the 4S version though as she needs that extra punch

31/05/2019 20:06:51

Well these two brings the tally up to eight EDF mini jets so far, so I think its time to leave them and find another project.....

Many of you had asked for both the Lightning and Hawk to be mini-sized EDF and as of yesterday, only the hawk was playing ball.

The Lightning unfortunately was being an absolute pig both in perfomance and ability to get a clean launch. Last weekend and Hastings MFC it took 4 attempts to get the Lighting into the air; the previous 3 ended up resulted in matchwood- rebuild-matchwood-rebuild-matchwood.....finally got it away but performance was disappointing. I made some mods to the cofg on Tuesday evening...still no good and yet more damage....i was planning on bining the design but decided today to go back to first principals......by making a 40% chucky glider. Strangely the chucky glider was rubbish also!!!!......turned out the wing incidence was not enough and the tailplane needed adjustment. The cofg was also re-established....needed to be further forward.

Doing this and the chucky flew great.

So replicating this to the Lightning and installing a 4S Fan unit (not the 3S as used in all the others design) the model was tested this afternoon.

Needles to say what a transformation....the launch was uncompromised and the 4S power was just right....no nasty tendencies, just went where you pointed her.....so the Pheonix has risen from the 'bin' so to speak

Thanks Guys,.....and thanks Stephen for putting the video up

It will be a plan and cnc pack just like all the others....just building Mk2 to check the build is ok after all the modifications

Thanks Steve,

It was a rather nasty windy day, cross the strip too....Mk2 version is on the go now!

Decided to stripout the old Dr MT units and replace with the FMS 50mm 4S units....The extra thrust from each fan should be around 120g or 4oz.....That 480g or 18oz additional thrust over the 4 units.

The weight of the FMS units are less so the overall weight saving was 5oz so the AUW dropped to 4lb, 11oz

Tried the model at Hastings yesterday and what a transformation!!!!....no problem taking off from quite long grass and the climb out was a good 40deg......Now cruises at around half throttle!...still using the 4s 5000mah pack too....Happy days

Yes they were the FMS fans....The HTIRC 50mm EDF which are the cheaper equivalent, do have a larger clearance and the casing is stronger....You can quite easily hold the HTIRC edf in your hand but you cant do it with the FMS edf unit....The impeller is identical but the overall outer diameter is 2mm greater

Not had any problems since so could be just a one off ( or two off )

Thread: New- 2018 CONCORDE for 4x50mm EDF

The grass was quite long so those 11/4" wheel were struggling....a lot to ask really for a 5lb models

The finish covering has added another 5oz so AUW is now 5lb. The power to weigh is now approaching its limit with these fan units...The fan units I used are the 50mm HK 11 balded 4S EDF units. These are not great (and are not available any more). The FMS 50mm 4S unit which are lighter (will save 6oz over the 4 units) and delivers another 6oz of thrust per fan (or another 1.5lbs over the four units), should really liven the model up.... the MK2 Concorde will have these plus a 5S pack!!!!!

I prefer to use just one battery pack to serve all four EDFs as it makes the weight less and save on multiple charging.....Unfortunately the current draw from a 4S pack 14.4v does cause the voltage to drop over the 4 motors so each motor is only getting 3.5S under load......In the past i have gone up another cell count so multiple 4S motors will generally be happy with a single common 5S pack. As there will be a high voltage, the current draw to match the power, can be reduced sightly so a 4500mah 5S lipo will give similar duration as a 5000mah 4S lipo (as long as you don't fly flat out)

Simon, regarding the wing tip drop, there is a conundrum here... the wings will flatten out in flight and at mach 2, they are almost straight.....so for scale flying speed...I think i got it about right

Thanks Guys, there will be a plan at some point but no deadline for me any more!.....just enjoying the model and getting it sorted and really fine tuned
