Thread: New EDF Mini Jets- Jet Provost & Folland Gnat

Shed some blades today on both the Gnat and the Provost!....not sure why but nice to know there was no damage to the model. Interesting to note that it shed all the blade and not just one or two so no nasty vibration after it happend.....just a 'pop' and then a smooth spinning motor.....

Needless to say i hadn't design access for a fan change as I had assumed these fans were bomb proof.... there was a bit of cutting and carving to do but manged it without to much damage. On the positive side I will design a suitable access hatch and route in in future so replacement fans can be installed without the knife coming out!

The Mig is one of the nicest to fly but as they are around the 1lb to 1lb-4oz mark, the performances, handling, etc are similar. Very difficult to choose but the ones i love to fly in order of preference is the Gnat, then Provost, Hunter, MiG, Sabre, then Phantom

I will be stocking the FMS fans. I Have some of the cheaper HTIRC versions for testing and the although the quality is very good, the FMS is better. Also the HTIRC fan has a 4900kv 3S motor where as the FMS has a 5400kv 3S motor so the FMS will give slightly more power. The 11- bladed fan themselves are identical on both units but the gap between the fan blade tip and the casing and diameter of the HTIRC casing, is bigger which tends to suggest tolerances are not as good......but hey £20 for the FMS fans unit and £16 for the just cant complain.....but i would recommend the FMS fan

Glad it flew ok Christopher with the AEO set up......The new generation of 11 bladed 50mm fans now available give so much better performance.....still you can try them in your new project!

Woody, The Lightning is still on the building board so no picts yet

I use the Ultra Parkfly pilots from Hobbyking....only civils but the right size

It is a 4S version pictured in the Mag and these were going in the Concord

Needless to say if you did pop a 4S 4500kv FMS unit in the jets and put a 4S lipo pack wouldnt be disappointed as that fan can deliver 750g of thrust as opposed to 600g for the 5300kv 3s on a 3S lipo

The only reason I'm suggesting 3S fans is most, if not all electric modellers, will have a 3S 2200...size ish... lipo kick around they can use......keep it cheap!!!!

Gnat Takeoff

Hold tight guys, will post some footage of both the Gnat and the Provost flying and taken yesterday evening.....

The Oracover does finish the model off beautifully, especially the Yellow Gnat...really good solid colour but it is heavy....with that and the cockpit detail, another 4oz was added to the AUW. However, both just carried the extra weight with no issues and probably perfomed better.

The Provost needed a little more nose weight due to the covering so I had to add some lead in the nose!!!....needles to say i going to move from the 2800 and try a 3200mah 3S lipo and then remove the nose weight......

With the 2800 pack i was getting a good 7mins so hoping to push the 10min barrier with the 3200mah.....

Could be your Fan is a 4S version and you are running on 3S would account for the low current draw

The new models will be launch one at a time over alternate months in the at the moment the Phantom wont be released for a good few months

excuse the pun but stick with Cyano for the construction and may a bit of PVA for the fan former and the joining of the wings

Better picture of the Hunter......AUW 20oz with 2200mah 3S.....Covering is not great as i used Oralite (easy coat)... its too transparent and shows all the marks underneath....may recover in Oricover

Phantom finally finished and covered in Lt Grey Oracover...AUW- 20oz with 2200mah 3S
