Simply awful

Never met him, nor saw him fly, but I much admired his work on here (most recently through the UKCAA threads). I have a Newman Precision Aeros Loaded Dice 40 and was looking forwards to any feedback, which I was sure would be forthcoming, when I got around to blogging the build. That of course pales into complete insignificence next to the loss of his family and those who knew him

Another great of our hobby gone. What terrible news

Now I think a diesel Laser would be a very nice thing to have. Didn't realise they were £2k nice! surprise

Yep, I completely agree. I am a member of 3 clubs, but the number of new plan, scratch or kit built models I see in a season completed by members is in the low single figures.

This is mostly about time - I like to build, but the world of work is more demanding than ever and with young children I have neither the time nor space to do so. Even those who have the skills and time are tending not to build as they get older, partly because two of the three clubs are slope members who no longer want to carry big unwieldy scale models up the hill, but also because balsa planes on the slope are simply not as good as an ARTF foamie or moulded model.

Building still occurs in our club, but the scope has expanded. The guys who have done the career/children thing and retired now seem to have the disposable income to spread their wings (I doubt that I will be that lucky though!), and their interests seem to have moved into larger models. The .60 sized warbird is not the draw, and does not have the wow factor at the patch, that it once did.

The twins had great promise and potential imo, but without enough take up to give them an airing to a wider audience this hugely laudable initiative seems to be close to the buffers unless enough pile in now

Huge credit to Richard for trying

Anyone that would genuinely buy one in the next two months please put their hand up .

I would ask you to be really honest because I dont want to waste my time on it if people are just "maybies."

Richard, totally understood - pm sent

Hi Davey,

I just use those tiny bottles from our 'free shipping' Eastern friends.

I think it's a lot more 'handy' than the large Aliphatic bottle.

... and no need to clean the nozzle as you just close the lid & done. Et voilà. yes

These look brilliant, not seen them before

Ordered - many thanks thumbs up

Yes, I'm also definitely in for one of these. An E if I already have the components to hand, otherwise it'll be i.c.

I've decided that I rather fancy a go at the Kwik Fli 40 IV

Having hunted through the various draws full of bits it seems I already have a suitable electric powertrain aswell as a few Irvines looking fro a good home, so I'm spoiled for choice

The trick to landing reliably is to give yourself enough time in the circuit and approach, don’t turn too soon, use that throttle to adjust the descent rate and, finally, not to flare too soon. Relax, practice makes perfect and, believe me, you’ll soon be wondering what all the fuss was about.

It might be possible to mount the battery vertically close to the firewall, that would help with the CG. Probably best to leave the battery plate out until the model is covered and we can see what is needed.

Or maybe reconsider the battery choice and configuration? I have a funfighter sized FW190 that could not be balanced without added weight when using 2200 packs. the battery simply couldn't be got far enough forwards

Instead, I swapped to a pair of Lipos that were short enough to be installed vertically immediately behind the firewall - a pair of 1500s I think - and problem solved. Perfect balance, and it's all "working" weight

the Flis haven't made it to the mass build - the Skywriter was the clear majority choice - but that's no reason not to build a Flea-Fli and blog it anyway! I'm certainly going to smiley

Thanks for clarification - totally fair, clear, and understood. All good thumbs up

The vote has been announced as

Final count

Skywriter 87 pts.

Flea Fli 47 pts.

Slec Fun Fly 38 pts

just for complete clarity - as I don't remember ever seeing a conclusion anywhere to the "single subject or more" question that was posed - does the fact that three subjects are mentioned mean that the MB is now "officially" for those three models. (Or is it Skywriter only, as the winner?)

I'm completely happy either way - just want to be sure what I'm signing up for before I go to the Sign Up thread

thanks are due for administering this and keeping us all in (sort of wink) order up to this point- appreciated thumbs up

I think the chances of a brexit or trump like turnaround are vanishingly thin at this stage, but it would be good to see any last votes registering interest - even if they are not for the front runner(s)

BTW, just looked at my usual supplier's website (Southern Modelcraft) and they have their version of Laser 5; will stock up at the shows next season.

Southern Modelcraft do both 0 and 5% nitro versions of their "Laser" fuel (both 15% fully synthetic oil)

I've got a coupe of gallons of their"ordinary" stuff still to get through first before I get anymore. However, it sounds like the laser mix might be the way to go

If enough commit to one or two works. so commit to a second or what's the point of keeping suggesting it ?

Thought I already had, but for the avoidance of any doubt here's committing to the Kwik-Fli

In fact two

- a Flea Fli

- and then one from either the original KF III (it is after all the 50th anniversary) or one of Martyn K's .40 sized jobbies: quite fancying the IV

Look to be going around in circles to me fella's let's simplify it, some feel Skywriter is too complex and is putting people off entering ?

Do you want to add the runner up into the MB ? all you need is enough to say yes otherwise what's the point ?

Think I've already said it on here, but "yes" - although not because the Skywriter is too complex:simply to get as many involved as possible

Why limit it to just one runner up? I'd say tot up the final results and if it's just two way out in front then fine, but if there are 3, or 4, that have a strong obvious following over the rest of the pack then go for it

What's the worst that can happen - people will build some planes! If it doesn't work then we'll know for next year

As KC suggested here above, maybe we could start a 'Mini Build'? angel

Definitely thumbs up

There's obviously a lot of enthusiasm for quite a few contenders, and it would be good to see build progress of any of those on here regardless of whether they are chosen for the MB or not - and that in turn may inspire others to have a go at those subjects

For the record, the Baron/Vicomte/Mousquetaire are definitely on the list of "future possibles": interesting models that I wasn't aware of until this debate. It's just that my immediate need is for an aerobat (hence my leaning towards the Kwik-Flis)
