Thread: Folding Prop Sizing
07/07/2009 12:57:37
Help guys please concerning folding props.
1) If I have a plane with a standard prop with a prop size of 10x6 (for example) and then want to put a folding prop on it, do I buy a 10x6 folding prop? or are the size considerations for folding props different to standard props?
2) Is there a size chart for folding props and electric outrunner motors?
3) What size prop would you use for a 250w outrunner?
BRC A2217-6T 1500Kv (250W) Brushless Motor. brc792
I did ask BRC about what folding prop would be suitable for this motor but in their defense said "sorry we don't know much about folding props yet, we need to find out more on this area".

I popped into Mikes Models a few months ago for old times sake (when I used to fly at Sutton Park) and the shop isn't what it used to be. It seemed to be trading under 2 names. I'm not sure if they are re-branding or changing ownership.
Perhaps you had a problem with them during this period?
I can't comment on their mail order service as I have only been a customer in the shop.
Just thought that I would add to the thread what I had noticed. Hopefully some good comments will come this way soon.

Brilliant after sales service, can't put into words how great they were.
My father-in-law broke the flight mode switch off his DX7 and needed a replacement.
I rang the Horizon Hobby UK phone number found on their website, listened to Chuck Berry singing "My Ding-a-ling" whilst on hold (made me laugh) and then spoke to a very helpful guy who took down my details and promised to send me a free replacement.
They don't sell the switches apparently so they are going to salvage one from a redundant set.

This is a brilliant map that I use a heck of a lot (and send updates to the site admin).
The TomTom POI feature is a 1st class idea.

Why did you post the receivers to them Phil?
Was it for a range test? What was the cost?
The reason I ask is that I have a AR7000 that I wouldn't mind being tested and perhaps the DX7 too.

Thread: Hanger 9 - Pulse XT 60 - Electric Conversion Help
27/06/2009 17:33:43
Thanks for the info guys
Giant Cod have some awesome deals, I'm trying to keep my battery weight as close to the Hanger 9 spec to begin with but I will probably try that larger one as my confidence grows with the model. It's nice to hear how their batteries are performing.
Thanks for the warning about the landings. My club strip can be a bit short at times as we have long grass surrounding it. Perhaps I will end up in the long grass if things get a bit tricky :D
I dread to think how much it would cost to electrify a giant pulse. This one's costing an arm and a leg so far (for my budget anyhow).

Thanks guys.
Well I've just been to Penn Models and they have relieved me of £272.
I've decided  to disable  the BEC from my Tornado 60A ESC that I got from Overlander.
That red wire will be disconnected and the extra battery pack connected to the RX via the Spektrum switch harness.
I just need to order that £99 battery from Maxpoly now.
E-Flite Power 60 motor EFLM4060A - £94
Spektrum AR7000 RX - £67
4x Spektrum DS821 Servos - £60
2x APC 15x8 Props - £12
4x servo ext leads - £4
Thread Lock £3.50
Canopy Glue £3.50
Spektrum Switch Harness - £12
2000mAh Ni-Mh receiver battery - £16

Please do tell me more as I am new to Electric and don't know what UBEC is and if this is an option or a necessity for this size of plane, battery & ESC.
26/06/2009 15:37:59
Yes, I like the Rhino batteries too. I have one of their 3S 2150mAh lumps for my Wild Hawk and I get 30 minute flight times on that. Thanks for looking around for a battery, I like you recommendations, especially the Maxpoly one. I don't recognise the name but the power is more and the weight less than the Rhino. Not bad for £99.
Can you tell me about the BEC/voltage regulator issues?

26/06/2009 14:12:00
Thanks for your time and comments on this guys, greatly appreciated.
I'm off to the model shop now to buy the E-Flite motor and return this other one to Overlander tomorrow by post.
Horizon Hobby Recommended Set up : Electric
Power 60 Brushless Outrunner 400Kv (EFLM4060A)
Speed Controller
60Amp Brushless (EFLA1060)
6 cell Li-Po 22.2volt 3850mah
4 Standard Size Spektrum DS821
15 x 8e
Does anyone have any suggestions of where I should get my Li-Po from for the above spec? Also what discharge rate should I go for?
Reliability & price is important to me.

The Story:
I purchased a Hanger 9 Pulse XT 60 this last weekend at the Weston Park show.
Prices were the same as anywhere really and paid £169 for the kit from Inwood's.
Unfortunately Inwood's couldn't sell me a motor & ESC to go with it so off I went to the Overlander tent in the middle of the front row, near the flightline.
Inwood's recommended I get an 800watt motor for it, so this is what I asked for in the Overlander tent. Plane is designed for a 60 IC engine but the bloke in Inwood's said "get an 800watt then it will be like putting a 90 IC engine in there".
Upon closer inspection back at home I'm not so sure Overlander have supplied me with the right motor, what do you lot think?
My Questions:
1) Is this motor suitable for my plane?
2) Will a 60A ESC be OK?
3) What Li-Po would I use?
4) What kind of prop sizes would you suggest?

Agreed, the mag landing on my doorstep every month is one of my highlights.
The Ashby's & team do a great job, but why cannot a photocopy be allowed?

Looks like it's happened again then. I would like to enter the competition but don't want to cut up my lovely mag. There is an article on the reverse side too
Can I enter the competition with a photocopy of the page?

BP Hobbies won't ship to anywhere else, just the US & Canada.
Why do companies do that? Must be doing well to turn down business.
I have emailed to see if there is any UK distributor.
