Thread: Sea Fury FB11 Build

At the time there were no laser cut parts or cowl for the plan so I did switch to the JB set from Belair. Even so other reasons mean I still haven't finished. The cowl from Fighteraces is still in its box.

Starting again.Where do I start? What a shambles.

I just realized it's 3 years since I started this project. Even allowing for a false start this is a record for me.

Whilst sorting out the stuff for this winters campaign I found an RCGF 15cc petrol engine that I have had for a few years. It seems a shame to leave it in a box so I bought a Wot4 XL ARTF to fit it. I just need to put that together before I start on the Sea Fury again.

Would you believe I spent this summer with a heart problem. I ended up with bypass surgery. I was not allowed to drive for six weeks. I had just begun to get back to normal when this started. 3 months went by before I was able to do anything. The last 12 months have been a nightmare. Still I'm OK now. Must get back to flying again.sarcastic

Anyone used Deluxe Materials Superphatic glue. Looks like a better glue than cyano.

I have decided to use a piece of 3/4 ply cut to the best shape to contact as many formers as possible. I have had to grind away a good bit of the rib to allow the wheel to fit properly in its recess I will fit a 1/16 ply doubler to reinforce this area.

The project is now on hold till next winter.

I received the new replacement Rx from Horizon. Its an upgrade to the latest telemetry ready version so I am quite happy.

I am pondering the best way of mounting the retracts. Should I get some 3/4 ply or use hardwood strip?

31/01/2017 16:02:34

A bit more progress on the wing centre section. The top skin is on I now need to work out how to fit the retracts and flap. I am using electric retracts as planned for the first models. This plan has a one piece wing so I think I will build it before I go onto the fuse. It is not too difficult to store a large wing out of the way.

The retracts are not true scale but the price of custom legs put me off. I think they are of the period and will look fine.

A bit more progress on the wings.

A really annoying problem arose. The new AR8000 Rx I bought turned out to be faulty. I don't like to blame the equipment because it is so rarely the problem. I bought another Rx and fitted in its place and it now works perfectly every time.

The fault with the Rx only arose after it had been bound and setup, when I left it unpowered for a day or two it seemed to lose bind. I sent it back to Horizon who are going to send me a new AR8010 in its place.

I have competed the Stab and fitted the hinges. I will now go onto the wing Centre section.

I am using angle iron to steady the centre braces until I have the centre ribs in place. This is a bit of a fiddle to begin with.

Started on the Horizontal stab. One small step!

I just rechecked the balance with the cowl on. It's bang on without any lead.

It is a remarkable coincidence. I changed the covering, changed the engine type and used 1/16 balsa sheeting rather than 1/32.

I intend now to check the total weight and static thrust before I attempt a maiden.

I can't think of any more safety checks I can do before I commit to air.

30/11/2016 17:25:06

Its together now. All the controls work. I have the ignition and choke on the receiver.

I may put some club decals and lettering on after the maiden.

I have left it a bit late, still a suitable day will appear.

You can see the ignition light is on in the second picture.

Just sorting out whats inthe box. I need to start somewhere. The horizontal stab looks a good place.

Going through the parts and checking against the plan.

I am now about to restart this project using the JB Kit and Fighteraces cowl. Pics soon.

Finally got back to it. I have given up on trying to get a good red match for the cowl. I am back to basics with a plain white gloss finish. I have run the engine in the model and everything seems fine. Once the white cowl is on I will need to balance and Hey presto.

The white gloss arrives on Thursday.

I seem to remember this was a quick build to fly this summer. Looking out of the window perhaps next summer will be OK.

Still back to the Sea Fury for the winter.
