Hi Niger,

Hmm food for thought. I do like the 2 to Tango, maybe scaled up to suit 2 Irvine 46s

Thanks all. I shall try the copydex trick first and heat. Patches if necessary. If my Acrowot comes out half as nice as your model Bob I shall be well pleased!

Initial flight tests with this rx in a slope soarer are impressive.

I have the top pin model with no satellite and just a 29mm aerial. I was worried about range, but I flew the model far enough today to be happy.

Does anyone have experience with this rx, particularly in setting it's fail safe mode? Mine is bound to a DX-18 so channel 8 adjusts gain and a 3 position switch selects no stab, gyro, or full self levelling. Seems to work well although self levelling seems to be only for panic mode.

I have set fail safe as per the manual, but am not brave enough to deliberately test it in flight as it takes about 10 seconds to reestablish control.

Final all up flying weight is 37 ozs. HK 's specs for Bixler 1 say 33 ozs. I am happy with the strength and flying performance, when gliding, hopefully the stock motor has enough power (200 watts measured) to get airborne. If not I will be looking for a better motor.

I must learn to use photos better.

Thread: Solartex alternative?
18/11/2018 09:47:11

Having stripped off the old tissue covering and rebuilt wing tips I used pale yellow Dylan on parachute silk for the main covering, doped on. With hindsight I should have used heat sensitive glue on the undercambered side as shrinking kept pulling this away. Coloured decor is red dyed silk. Darker band is by adding red oil paint to dope, then doping silk onto glass sheet, then slicing a strip with scalpel and straight edge, before applying to surface with more dope. Patient work but so much more satisfying than plastic alternatives and it's light and translucent. Fuselage treated likewise.

Solartex is great and easy to use especially good round complex curves where it takes a lot of pulling and shrinking to shape. However I think it still looks plastic unless spray painted. Silk and dope is the way to go, cheaper than oratex and in my op, the easiest of all to apply and finish if you are patient. Can't find silk? Search for lightweight dress lining for synthetic (polyester) or real sllk. Polyester will heat shrink too, to an extent. For tricky bits, overlaps and edges can be sande smooth after drying and dooing. Difficult to get under 100 g per Sq m. For the best, get Etaki Silk from Only 3o g and doping doesn't add much if you are careful. One coat to apply and shrink. Another to fill, then pu satin varnish to fuel proof. Cellulose paste (wallpaper paste ) mixed thin for allocation also works well.

Fibre glass covered wings. Next covering with heatshrink film.

Horrible stuff to use the lightweight film wrinkles easily and doesn't give a second chance.

Top surfaces finished.

The result is much stiffer than the original. I forgot to weigh the wings before starting. They still feel very light and I think the increased strength will help when my grandson flies it. Hopefully the horrible colours will help orientation.

Next job to colour the fuse and refit radio.

After gluing with thick cyanosis, the slots are filled with epoxy filler. With the rods inserted under the tail also, the rear fuselage is now stiff and the tail won't wag. Much more resiliant for hard landings.

Next step will be covering the fuselage front with light weight fibreglass.

Has anyone ever come across the Allegro 2000 in kit form?

Nice subject for electric slow motor glider type.

Another fine mess you've gotten me into. A fallen pilot having a nap ? This will need removal of canopy, fortunately canopy glue is heat sensitive so a warm blade separates it.1540590822738-809620538.jpg

Couldn't resist using spare excess mix to enlarge skid. Original foam was mostly worn away. You can mould this mix like putty abpnd it sticks well, is light and Sands easily . It needs to as this is a mess. Michael Angel I'm not, did he start like this??15405880284291250462057.jpg

Next turning attention to the tail. No wonder these are cheap. Lots of unglazed gaps around the tailplane and find meant the horizontalk plane was off w.r. to wing. Filled with epoxy mix then pulled into position and held there while glue set. Tidier and stronger. Filets formed all round.1540588005409-2091736467.jpg
