Thread: Solarfilm

I must admit going into panic mode on first reading about the demise of Solarfilm on this forum and pretty much bought at least ten years of supply . Wonder if I could have my body wrapped in any unused Solartex . Might save on the cost of a coffin!

They have royally cheesed me off and I will be adding my views to Yell and Yelp too (I should have read those beforehand!). I should add that I do understand if mistakes are made ie if the item was out of stock and the website had not been updated. I chased up a week after the order was made to enquire to its whereabouts. I got an apology for the delay (no reason given)  and advised it was being posted first class. Emails sent again subsequently with no back at all. . The rest as they say is history!

However on the plus note and having got fed up off with no response from Apex (supposed 48 hours to respond advice had elapsed by several working days) . I ordered the same item via Nexus yesterday afternoon and it arrived today, hooray for Nexus! A very different experience to Apex. I have instituted a "claw back" of funds and hope Apex will pull their finger out and refund my money.

Regret still nothing. Tried ringing . Phone picked up and put down ! No response to emails/ contact via Apex's website. Have asked for full refund . I have managed to find another at Nexus. Hopefully that at least will be with me tomorrow.

So very disappointed.

Thread: Apex Models Berks

Its been close to two weeks since the original order was processed. At the time the item in question was shown on Apex's website as being in stock. I checked earlier this afternoon and its now listed as "supplier stock" with a delay of 2-5 working days. I decided to contact Logic who are distributors and they inform me that the it will be a minimum of two weeks plus before they get this in! I don't have an issue with shops if they are quick to communicate the facts. At least that gives me, the customer the opportunity to make a decision to wait or choose an alternative. We have had four days of postage delivery since being advised by Apex that it was posted 1st class. Items I ordered 2nd class on Friday have got to me yesterday. Two orders off EBay from China on Thursday last arrived today , so I think its fair to hope that items advised that they were posted in the UK 1st Class should have got to me by now!

Trevor. I've never been to Apex. The website shows an extensive range of R/C aeromodelling items and accessories. There is a difference between showing an item in stock, supplier stock/ shadow stock, or out of stock. If you are passing could you please ask them to answer their phones!

Martin oops! I must admit I couldn't understand what your point was initially . No pun was intended frown. (I did mean Berkshire, honest!)

I'm being blighted with automated calls telling me that my I.P address has been compromised and to press button on phone to be put through to technical department! (Twice a day for last week inc Sunday . Neighbours also getting same calls)

Sorry not sorted. Had email from Apex on the same day as the original post here . Had apology for delay (no reason) told it was being posted first class that day . Nothing to date! Seriously cheesed off . I note website reviews of the shop service are pretty poor. Wish I'd read those beforehand!

I shall revert to using SMC who offer a brilliant service and do get in contact if the item is going to be delayed (Apex's website advised item was in stock - SMC didn't have it in at the time!)

Does anyone on the forum use Apex Models in Crowthorne , Berks? I've been trying (with no success) to get through both by phone and emails for the last few days to chase up on an Internet purchase . Wonder if they are away on Holiday?

In response Bob. The ARTF market has far overtaken the "build end" of the hobby . In addition to cheaper options from the far east (remind me to tell you the story of the mid air covering peeling off!).

Solarfilm did have the company on the market for about a year with no takers. I had hoped that they may consider just carrying on with direct sales (this has already been covered by an earlier post!) Great shame as Ive used their products pretty much all my modelling life. Will have to switch to alternatives when I run out my existing stock (oracover, oratex , diatex , tissue, brown paper etc)

Hello Cymaz,

You are quite right, there is a difference between the two . Sorry should have said I have both. My Dragon is the "Golden" limited version. I worked (part time) for a chap who used to bring these in as Grey Imports back in the mid 70's to 80's . He had his fingers in lots of pies! I can't remember how much these were new but seem to recollect figures of £2,000 back then. I managed to get hold of the G.D about 10 years ago from my ex bosses estate . It languished in my cupboard until I met a chap in the US last year who specialises in refurbishing these (I have had several offers but will hang on) . I will collect when I go to the states in the spring. The 1000ZXL is a lovely bit of kit but is also in need of some work and is packed ready for my trip in March.(Bought in auction)

PM me if you fancy a trip up to have a look as I'll be moving closer to you post summer!

My LP12 is the Sondek . (Not the more expensive one posted by Cymaz- I don't think that the wife would ever forgive me if I bought that!) I was very fortunate to acquire this from the estate of an old friend who was a true audiophile and in the record business. I also managed to get my hands on a Nakamichi Dragon.1000 ZXL (currently being refurbished).Audio Research integrated amp and a set of B & W speakers to suit!

For those interested in Audio equipment I have in the past bought equipment from Gildings the Auctioneers (Sale was on today for Collectors Auction - which included Amps, reel to reels etc)

I listened to the one I bought (second hand ) in 77 and the 2 from early 90's on my refurbished Linn LP12. There is something magical about vinyl (not to mention smell of curing dope!)

Mine went on Monday. Thermostat has packed in on a two and half year installation . Earliest engineer can come in is this Friday. Just filled up with coal and logs. To top that my old 35mhz Skyleader system has just decided to give up too.

My first was with a Laser 120 , Second had a very well used Laser 150 fitted (now residing in a 1/4 Pilot Tiger moth.). The 150 seemed to be the better choice .

Thread: Recommendations for good sunglasses

I have the same problem as you. Having tried various "over the glasses" options . I plonked for buying prescription sunglasses via my local optician when replacing my daily ones. Lots of options and prices started from £50 . I ended up with a pair of  Maui Jims wrap arounds with vario focals for those fiddly bits. Similar to the Oakley Jawbreaker . These were far better than my standard reactolite's. Watery eye's are a real issue for me.

I seem to recollect that there is a company that advertises in the RCME offering polarised glasses. They will also make them up to your prescription. A couple of members at our club have bought theirs from this company and are very happy with them.
