Thread: electric motors in the winter
29/10/2012 21:51:18

Because of the rapid difference in molecular state of the metals from sub zero to extremely hot. (or so they said on my engineering degree course)

For example; It's a beautiful clear cloudless winters day, the snow is lying evenly over the flying field. It's sub zero. Your first model runs but intermitently loses power, the solder joints to the esc leads have contracted and gone brittle. Your second model runs fine on test, but it's airborne for 45 seconds and the motor stops suddenly, the surge from the battery blows the ESC. The dramatic increase in temperature from minus 10 to plus 100 degrees F has destroyed the motors bearings causing the seizure.

Solution: let the models warm gently in the car and check the wiring thoroughly before flying.

Would have been my first 'Mass Build' project, however on calculation I quite simply cannot justify the extra expence this particular model would incur. I shall do a 'Vintage' possibly a Vic Smeed with the materials I do have though.face 9

Good figures, plenty of plenty if required.

Thread: C/F tubing for fuselage structure
28/10/2012 11:33:00

This is an interesting thread Ady and some good viable solutions. So many good full size designs are steel tube, wood and fabric and that to replace the tube with carbon would seem a good modern day proposition, yet even that comes with it's problems.

Thread: Classic and the unusal full size.

Congratulaions!!smileyBoy am I jealous! I hope you are able to get some video. I'm sure with a bit of elevator mixing the airbrakes will be just fine. Or can you set it on a 3 position switch with increasing percentages. It's always a good idea to have a little bit of speed on approach anyway it increases control responses in case of problems. Well done Stuart!! Have a radgepat on the back!

Very Nice! Here's hoping all goes well for the maiden. Good luck yes I'm going to look for this plan and see if I can adapt it for a SEPECAT Jaguar. I used to fly them.

Thread: how long to wait for hobby king orders

You're lucky mate, I've been waiting since 19th Sept for an back order that's still not in stock! However I realised there would be a wait and I'm not desperate and it will be a nice unexpected surprise when it arrives and I can no longer remember why I ordered it in the first place.face 22

Sounds like a place where I would barge about in my wheelchair, knocking over displays, blocking aisles etc. whilst shouting "I'm going to spend an obscene a amount of money in here so I want you to suck up to me big time!" Then buy a packet of quick links and leave.

Awwe Stuart, thank you so much for this photo. She's still looking good but was in your colour scheme with little RAF roundels on the wings when I flew her. smiley The weathers quite settled for a maiden over the next day or so but don't rush it as you've done an amazing job so far. I can't wait!
